I’m getting pretty tired, when I ask for advice on self-defence, of being met with ‘why are you looking for a fight, just run away’. Obviously if I have an opportunity to defend myself with my words, situational awareness and ability to escape, I will, but how realistic is that actually?
How many of us can confidently say we can outrun so many people that we’re willing to turn our back to someone and bolt, knowing that none of our attackers can catch us? I certainly can’t, and I’d say I’m faster than most people…
Not only this, but how often are we going to be put in self-defence scenarios where we have a completely (or mostly) unobstructed route of escape? If I’m in a bar, a club, a street, anywhere really, there are many obstacles to me being able to just run away: there are people, there are cars, there are doors even. A single door could lose you a huge lead that you have on a guy chasing you down.
Not only this, but what about when you don’t WANT to run away? I might have friends with me, I might have a partner, children etc. who I can’t just assume can run as fast as I can. What if I don’t want to ditch the person(s) I’m with, and I am forced to defend not only myself, but them too?
Granted, if some fat dude comes up to me brandishing a knife in a car park and I’m on my own then I’m going to run away because I easily can. However, I think it’s kind of ridiculous that people act as if ‘just run away’ is a strategy that beats everything, and it’s getting on my nerves that so many smartasses tell me to ‘just run away and stop looking for a fight’ on forum pages when I ask questions. Do any of you have thoughts on this? Does it happen to you guys? Do you maybe have a fantastic argument that will convince me running away is always the best option? All comments welcome!
