I had a bit of a confrontation last week and it really made me rethink things with those “What if” moments.
I’m a 33 year old male, 5’10, 200lbs. I guess a pretty big guy. I have absolutely no fighting experience or training. I’ve never been in a fight before on my adult life. I’ve never even been in any kind of confrontation aside from last week.
I was at the gas station, minding my own business. Most of the pumps were full, so instead of going around, I drove up the middle of one of the round of pumps and backed into a front one. I have a back up camera, absolutely nothing bad happened. I parked fine.
I get out of my SUV and walk around to the pump and right as I get there this psychopath asshole starts going off on me, saying I parked way to close to his bumper and to “fucking move or there will be problems” ... he was maybe around my age, a little younger. A little taller than me but a lot skinnier. I looked at the space and I swear, there was like half a car length of space. I could easily fit between it. So I said “I’m not even that close, what’s the problem?” He told me to shut the fuck and move, and stepped closer to me.
At this point my adrenaline was pumping so hard. I was angry, and scared at the same time. Right before it escalated though, this older man a pump over shouted at him and said “Hey, cut that shit out. Leave him alone” he told me to stay out of it, and he said “Stop or I’m calling the cops” and he just stood there and other people started noticing. He called me a dead ass and went back over to his truck and finished pumping gas. The most alarming part is he had his wife in the car with him too. I guess I assume it was his wife.
I was so worked up and shaky, but he backed out all aggressively to where is tire screeched and sped out of the parking lot. I calmed down a little bit and finished pumping gas.
Never been into a situation like that. I don’t carry any weapons on me. The only thing I carry that could even be considered a weapon is a pocket knife, but I carry it as a tool and not self defense. I also have a collapsible baton in my glove box, but I more have that for ever needing to break glass, and there’s a lot of wild dogs around my work place sometimes early morning and late at night, so I keep it for that purpose. They’ve been known to be aggressive to some of the co workers sometimes.
What could I have done if shit hit the fan and he started attacking me? What stage would be acceptable to throw the first punch so you don’t get completely fucked over? I never underestimate anyone. I go through automatically assuming everyone is a potential boxer/martial artist/mma fighter. I imagine in a realistic scenario I would of just probably wildly started swinging or try to throw him to the ground like most people do. But this really got my gears spinning and thinking hard.
What would you of done in my situation of this escalated and came to blows?
