Almost caught my step-dad pooping.

Quick informational, recently separated from the Air Force doing Security Forces (law enforcement and security type stuff), moved in with my mom while the wife and I save some money to buy a house, and my mom and step-dad are moving from one state to the other and my step-dad hasn't moved yet while he tries to sell his business but visits very often. Step-dad is in town right now working on the new house. Mom and step-dad are did not sleep at home last night because step-dad is allergic to my dog's hair and he's too nice to make them sleep outside in snow. Also on mobile so.. hopefully this turns out ok.So the story begins after taking my brother to school. I went to my room to go back to bed and I hear the door that connects the house to the garage open, close, then quick steps to the 2nd floor (i live in the basement setup for now). I know for a fact my mom would never be up this early if she didn't have to be due to her chronic migraines. I go up stairs and look through the garage and the side garage is open and not the main one. The main garage needs a remote but the side needs a keypad to enter and while I'm not here oermanently I use the side garage but I was 100% sure I closed it. So I called out "mom?" a few times with no response. I went back downstairs and grabbed my gun and went into moms room where I'm pretty sure the noise was coming from. I entered the already open room with nothing exciting to see. I do hear feet scuffling in the bathroom and I tactfully move to the side of the door ready to enter. I took a breath and mentally prepared my breaching plan. I took a quick pause and decided to knock just in case. Then I hear my step-dad say "what?".
