CCW, Are you taking preventative measures around your house for security?

Hello /r/CCW,I recently had my interest piqued by a post from /u/snake-doctor about a recent scenario of his. While reading his post, I felt that there was a lot of information that more people needed to hear regarding self defense at home, and more specifically home security. I imagine that everyone on this sub carries to protect themselves or their loved ones, and I think there are more steps we can all take to increase security in the home. Before the info, I want everyone to keep in mind, these are not perfect solutions. If someone wants to go somewhere, they will eventually go there. There's no lock on the planet that can stop a determined criminal.A Quality Deadbolt. Most people don't think twice about the single most important lock on the door. A deadbolt is the beefy hunk of metal that keeps your door closed when SHTF. Don't buy a $20 kwikset Lowes special. They will fail when put under any significant load. Purchase a Grade 1 Deadbolt with a shroud. The shroud will help locate the lock in the pocket, and will reduce load on other components in the event of someone attempting to bust it with a crowbar or hammer. When purchasing a deadbolt, consider the area surrounding the door. Does it have glass near the lock? Maybe you might want a Double cylinder instead of a single w/ thumb turn. Be smart. Think like a criminal when you are evaluating security. When you install your fancy new deadbolt, make sure the deadbolt throws freely, and can extend the full throw length. Here's a Grade 1 Single Cylinder (thumb turn) Deadbolt.Door/Frame/Jamb Reinforcements.A deadbolt is only as strong as what's around it. With a good enough kick, most wood frames will blow out. Google "Door Frame Kicked in" if you don't believe me. Frame reinforcements are a big security upgrade for wooden door/frame setups. Here's the door plate. Here's an all inclusive plate package.Longer screws. This is a no-brainer. Most locks come with short (AKA sub 1 inch) screws. Replace all the small screws with quality star drive wood screws. If the wood screws mount flush with the reinforcement plates, or the wood around them, the harder it will be to get a crowbar or something else on them to break them. Your typical short screw only bites into the relatively wimpy layer of wood right near the surface. You want as much contact with the screw and wood as possible for better holding power. The absolute best option is to screw all the way into the stud next to the door. Here are some long wood screws. After you do those three things, congratulations! You've done more than most people will ever do to improve their security!A few parting words,A lock does absolutely nothing if you don't use it. Of the break-ins I've had the pleasure of repairing, 2 of them were due to the homeowners leaving the house unlocked. If you have a doggy door, make sure you have the proper cover to go over it when you leave your home. All it takes is someone to reach through to get into your home.If you need help building a good security setup for your home, support your local locksmith. They'll be happy to help you. Thanks, scooterprint via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/34BCHmw
