Probability of a modern shotgun going off completely by itself?

I own a budget 12 gauge (Rock Island Armory M5) and a S&W SD40. The SD40 I keep in condition 0 at all times whether it's being carried on me, or resting in my nightstand. I just think the trigger should have some kind of guard like the holster or drawer - as to the best of my understanding, there's no way in Hell a modern handgun will "just fire" without the trigger being pulled. Mine is drop safe too as most are so I don't worry about that happening at all. What about shotguns though? Does that truism equally apply? I've heard stories of shotguns going off without being dropped, trigger pulled, or handled at all. I have never seen this with my own eyes but I imagine that these stories are absolute freak occurrences, like as in you're more likely to be killed by a random anvil falling from the sky or a being struck by 2 consecutive meteors. But I'm no expert or authority, and I've heard about these stories enough that I'm somewhat hesitant to leave one in the chamber. At the moment I store my 12 gauge in a Pelican case flat on the ground, with rounds in the mag, safety off, and nothing in the chamber. It is also relatively clean; oiled frequently; flat on the ground and not situated on top of a furnace. And again, it is cheap, like $200-300 - but qualifies as a modern shotgun. Also, no children to worry about at my place. So what's the redpill on this topic? Again, specifically for shotguns. Is this probability just greatly exaggerated by liberal anti-gun propaganda? Or should I keep one in the chamber and instead worry more about being hit by a sky anvil? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2LIKHwm
