I just moved out of NJ and am waiting on my CPL in WA and struggling to decide what to get as my first carry. Coming from NJ I never really dealt with compacts much since NJ is functionally no-issue, so I’m pretty unfamiliar in this territory and don’t really know what to look for or how to evaluate. I would love some feedback and suggestions on my ideas and carry options.I went to a range yesterday that had rentals and tried out 4 compact pistols that I had heard good things about to get a feel for each and ran each through the same series of tests: dry fire to get feel for trigger and sight allignment, slow fire for accuracy, slide lock reload (range only gave one magazine so for each I chambered a round, removed the magazine and set it on the bench), full magazine group at moderate pace, and low ready to quick 2-3 rounds on target to approximate a draw as best as possible.Compacts I tried:FNS-9c - Felt very comfortable in my hand with the pinky extension mag and still had good purchase with not mag in. I shot it decently well especially considering it was the first of the day; my later full mag group was better than my initial slow fire group. Felt the least snappy, not too surprising since it is the second heaviest I tried. Only issue of note was that the magazine does not like to drop free when empty though fine with a few rounds in it. Does anyone make extended mag releases for these? I could maybe add a little weight to the bottom. Also a little awkward to actuate the release (used to full sized grips where there is plenty of room to reposition). I like that you can carry a backup 17 rounder.G26 - Grip was a little too chunky for my hand and far too short for me to feel comfortable with it with no magazine. Even with the pinky extension mag I didn’t feel like I had full purchase, plus the magazine/extension felt a little wobbly (may have just been the specific mag). Not really sure I would be able to get a comfortable and confident draw. I do like the availabilty of larger back up magazines like the FNS. Mag was a little reluctant to drop free and the short grip made it really hard for my to reposition to hit the mag release. I actually shot this the best ironically considering how uncomfortable it fit my hand, maybe a sign to try it and see if I can make it comfortable, though maybe just because I have probably put more rounds through various glocks than any other pistol platform. Probably leaning away from this though open to input on ways to make this more comfortable.XD compact - Heaviest of the 4. Definitely the least comfortable grip for me with the magazine in. I definitely shot it the worst. A little surprised since I have shot a full sized XD before and did quite well with it and really liked it. I feel comfortable ruling this one out.Sig P365 - Most comfortable of the 4 magazine in or out, but especially out. Love how slim it is while still packing 10 rounds (and apparently there are 12 rounders available). Handled very well, though it was the snappiest, again not surprising since it is the lightest of the 4 by a substantial amount. This really showed in my faster firing groups which really opened up. If they made this heavier I would be all over it. Magazine dropped free very nicely and I felt that the grip was large enough for me to comfortable reposition to actuate the mag release. Those are the compacts I tried yesterday, but I have also shot the M&P2.0 compact before. I really couldn’t get over the hinged trigger. Since there are so many decent options available I don’t think it’s worth getting something I actively dislike and trying to train through it.I have also shot various Berettas, though no compacts, and love the CZ75 line, though again no compacts and have never shot their polymers. Are either of those worth looking at? The range didn’t have either compact lines to demo so I don’t know if I would be able to get actual trigger time with them.Am I on the right track here or am I overlooking key evaluation factors? Are there any other compacts that I really ought to take a look at or will I just make it harder for myself? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2LoX37O
