What do you do when flying, carry on only?

I'm going to be lost without the xds in my pocket, but i think i can handle a few days without it. I always have a pocket knife too, so that'll be weird...Anyways, I'm going on a short trip to Florida. Flying there, and not planning on checking any bags. With a carry on only, there's really nothing i can bring, right? What if my girlfriend is checking a bag? Are there things that are ok to take in checked luggage? That won't raise any red flags?
