Would it be smart to finally buy a handgun for self-defense because of the Carona Virus?

Let me explain.I have never owned a weapon. I have shot, and I do have a license to carry, but I have never had my own gun. Why? I dunno, I never thought to carry cause I live in a bubble in my head and think you are always safe, which you arguably are, but you never know.Anyway, here in Texas, there are tons of schools shutting down, water is getting scarce, the RODEO was shut down and jobs are closing. I am afraid in the event of a quarantine, there will be people who take advantage of this to break into homes or other buildings. I don't live in a bad neighborhood, but there have been people who scope out the area before that aren't from my county.I would like to know if it is right to at least want to arm myself so I can protect my family. My dad doesn't understand the seriousness of this virus and it will be something he has to deal with. I aim to protect him and my family.
