TXC X1:Pro AIWB Holster Review

I’ve been EDCing an (OG) TXC X1 + Glock 19/17/26, depending on attire, for the last year or so. Before that I ran a T1C Axis Slim. I absolutely love the OG X1. I did “mod” it a little bit, because I found Dark Star Gear’s “Dark Wing” concealment wing conceals 10x better than anything else on the market. I also swapped out TXC’s plastic clip for a long Veddor clip that also allowed me to add a cant. I’m a relatively small guy, at 5’8’’ 175 lbs, but with these mods, carrying AIWB at 1 o’clock, I can easily conceal my G26 and G19 without printing in a t-shirt, and my G17 barely prints and is perfect for jacket/flannel weather. Anyways, this isn’t a review on the X1, but I did want to point out that I’m a big fan of it and it’s my EDC along side one of their mag carriers. The one or two negatives I have for the OG X1 is that the retention can’t be adjusted, so my P80 G26 with a reshaped trigger doesn’t fit as tight as I’d like; and then the big negative: the fact that it’s a 2 piece design, so when OG X1 holster doesn’t have a gun in it, it kind of collapses on itself, making it much harder to re-holster.With those negatives in mind, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the announcement of the X1:Pro, because it happened to address both of them. Suffice to say, I ordered one first thing in the morning on the day of their release. So, without further ado…I got my X1:Pro about a week or so ago, and first impressions were great. First thing I did was tighten down the retention (since I finally can!) I did a quick retention test for all my Glocks, including my P80. The fit for each was superb — the P80 G26 even had a nice “click.”Next up, I, of course, put it on. But this is where my excitement started to die down a bit. One of the changes I was a bit iffy about with the X1:Pro was the fact that it no longer had a concealment wing, instead using TXC’s new “Helix” technology, which changes the angle of the clip to really help drive the gun into your body, mimicking the function of a concealment wing but without the added physical (and visual) bulk. I figured, worst case I could slap my Dark Wing and Vedder clip on it.First gun I tried the X1:Pro with was my P80 G26. I printed. Next gun, my G19.5. Again, I printed. I’m sure you could imagine how much my G17.4 printed. After spending a little bit of time getting familiar with the Helix design (which I really do think is quite awesome), I started trying to diagnose why the concealment was so bad, even though the Helix should be doing an equal or better job of a concealment wing. And it was pretty easy to see that the problem was the Mod4 clips. The metal Mod4 clips that the X1:Pro ship with are way too flimsy for the Helix design to do anything useful. They bend so easily that it's like the Helix doesn't even exist. Like I said, I printed with my G26 in a t-shirt, which never happens with my OG X1 + Dark Wing concealment wing. So first thing I did was swap the flimsy Mod4 clip with one of TXC's standard plastic clips I had lying around. After this quick change, the X1:Pro conceals slightly better than my OG X1 + Dark Wing (even small improvements are a huge win), and has much better rigidity and retention. (Note that I do still run a Mod4 on my mag carrier and it works great, since you don’t need a concealment wing or weird angles to conceal a mag.)After seeing how much using the plastic clips improved things, I figured I’d start googling to see if Discreet Carry Concepts (the makers of the Mod4) carried anything a bit “sturdier” (because I’ll admit, I like the look and feel of metal clips), but they all looked to be made from the same thin material as the Mod4. So, I figured I’d give UltiClip a try since I saw that they came out with a “XL” version awhile back made for belt-mounted kydex holsters.Fast-forward to yesterday, I got my UltiClip XL in the mail and it’s much, much sturdier than the Mod4, and it has the added benefit of locking onto your belt. And since it locks onto the belt pretty tightly, it offers even better concealment than the plastic clips did, which had a tendency to want to slightly rotate on the belt due to the Helix. So with that said, I’d definitely recommend either A) ordering an extra plastic clip with your X1:Pro, or B) grabbing an UltiClip XL from UltiClip’s website when ordering an X1:Pro.After a bit of experimenting, the X1:Pro + UltiClip XL is my new EDC. Better concealment, more comfortable, adjustable retention, and better rigidity. It’s all better. Just nix the Mod4. It’s the only thing holding this holster back.TL;DR I really think they should drop the Mod4 clips and go with the standard more rigid plastic clips, or even better, go with an UltiClip XL. The Mod4 clips do absolutely nothing to showcase their awesome Helix design. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/38F608w
