Training to react while half asleep

I have a pitbull who doesn't normally bark, only when something is really sketchy. He sleeps in the front room of our duplex. We live on a quiet street in an inner ring suburb, and he is my poor man's burglar alarm.Last night around 4:30 he barked 3 times. I was dead asleep, but it woke me up immediately. I sat bolt upright, got out of bed and walked to see what the problem was, leaving my FNS9/TLR1 in my nightstand. It was just the neighbors loading up to go on a trip (church mission trip I think) but it took me 10 solid seconds of being awake to realize that I got up and didnt think at all about what I was doing and just reacted (and my reaction was to just go and see what was going on, instead of arming myself and turning on a damn flashlight). Is there a way for me to train to slow down my reaction from waking from a dead sleep? What I did this morning was honestly kind of sobering to me, in that I have spent significant amounts of time and money arming myself and training with those arms but still need to train my mind to work counter to my immediate instincts.Edit: Please let me know if this is the wrong sub, thought this was relatively relevant to the sub, if it isnt mods please delete. via /r/CCW http://bit.ly/2X3Pie6
