Striking as main artillery, grappling as supplementary system

Hi, i was re-reading an old geoff thompson's book i found yesterday. At one part he states that, no matter how effective grappling is in mma and despite its big popularity nowdays, striking (specially punching) should always be your main artillery in a street altercation. Everything else is back-up when you've already fucked up. Do you agree with this statement, even if you are a far more experienced grappler than a striker? (as myself, although i started with boxing). Somehow i feel like a lot more people could give you a battle on their feet, but many less ass&& could grapple you. What are your thoughts on this?
