Tldr: I'm trying to figure out a ranged self defense option that isn't a gun because loud noise put me out of commission cause ADHD/neurodivergent bs , and I'm thinking a slingshot with broad head darts could work. If you got any other ideas let me know
So I live in the states and for whatever reason I don't want to carry a gun, it's not some hippie stuff but Its something with I don't want to get my ears blown out along with the situation where I just shot someone also it might have something with my ADHD and possible undiagnosed autism (Jerry still out on that one but I know my brain has a different chemistry and I have problems with not being able to socialize that well with a different thought process)
Also not to mention this could help people in countries where it's difficult to get a fire arm or something similar
But I'm honestly thinking that a slingshot with broad head darts could work if not one with really powerful bands and a lead ball, so there's a few advantages to this system.
First it's very light weight like a total of a few ounces and a slingshot and a few darts , compared to an average semiautomatic 9mm pistol which is roughly three pounds with the only benefit of fire rate and maybe power. But humans aren't the most sturdy thing and the risk of over penetration is something to take into account with a firearm
Second benefit is something sticking out of someone makes it a lot more difficult to move. If it's in the leg they're not even gonna be able to limp towards you in the torso they would because to twist their body or move because the broad head will do even more damage
Third, along with the mentioned weight it would be a lot easier/ more comfortable to carry compared to appendix carry and a lot more concealable that side carry, have you sling shot on one side and and the dart on the other, a holster and a sheath that stay hugged under your shirt, a dart already on the string with the back going across your belt
Forth, if you got with the darts. It functions as an oh shit knife , just pull it out and start stabbing if you're grabbed or in a situation you can't get to the slingshot itself
Fifth, they're a lot cheaper to get. Similar to the home defense crossbows coming on the market they're much cheaper than a fire arm, if I had a 3d printer I could print everything except the bands and the dart but I could print the modifications to the cross bow bolts they sell.
All in all kinda stupid idea that could actually work with a decent amount of practice and a difference in tactics , like cover , no one ever talks about cover in self defense situation or active shooter and will a single shot weapon cover is a really good
