CCW scenario for the new folks…

I was reading like a week ago where someone posted this amped up story about how they were a witness to a theft at a store and it got me thinking about the scenarios new carriers play out in their heads over what concealed carry is like, and how often I have to remind people that you’re not a cop, you’re not given a license to kill, and legal self defense is more complicated than what criminal law will let you get away with. Carrying a gun is way more boring than people think, for example:Today I had a road rager confront me in the parking lot of a Walmart because he was angry that I “cut him off” by u-turning when he had a right on red. The guy pulled up behind my parked car and started screaming his head off about how I was an asshole, etc, and in response I calmly told him if he thinks I cut him off he should take a defensive driving course. He kept escalating and saying he was going to beat my ass, and I in turn told him “Whatever, have a nice day” and walked inside.CCW is less about the fact that you carry a gun and know how to use it, and more about knowing WHEN it’s appropriate to engage a subject. A fight you walk away from or de-escalate is a fight that you win. We shouldn’t be looking for the opportunity to draw our guns, but rather every opportunity to avoid it at all costs.TL;DR: De-escalation techniques and knowing how to walk away from an avoidable confrontation is more important than your setup or shooting abilities. For clarification: I’ve been a daily concealed carrier the past nearly 5 years (I turn 26 in 2 months), I’ve been a competitive shooter, and I’m a USCCA certified instructor. I currently am a non-sworn employee of a police department and will be applying as an officer when I complete my degree. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/3jsrXQI
