Some advice my lawyer gave me when I first got my CPL

Hopefully some of you will find his advice useful should you ever be unfortunate enough to have to use deadly force. For most people, this event is incredibly traumatic and you will be extremely flustered and stressed afterwards. You should avoid making statements to the police while your brain is in this state. It may be difficult to arrange your thoughts and you might make some mistakes and say something that could be used against you down the road. My lawyer advised me to remain silent for 48 hours to let your brain calm down to the point where you can gather your thoughts and make sense of the event. Speaking in the heat and passion of the moment you might misstate the timeline, order of events, nature of the event, why you felt your life was in danger, etc.Simply tell the officer that you need some time to calm down before you give any statement. The office cannot hold this against you- in fact, when a law enforcement office is involved in a shooting (at least where I’m from) they do not take any statement from the officer until at least 48 hours have passed after the shooting. Their reason for they require their officers to delay making any kind of report or statement is the same reasons you should do the same. You should never volunteer any information, especially when you’re brain is in shock.Something worth considering at least. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/3959T8T
