You occasionally see in movies (like jaws) a character will put poison in their hollow point covered by wax. Obviously this is (probably) illegal, but could you do something similar for your self defense ammo and have it work as intended? Maybe with capsaicin, or another chemical meant to cause pain, rather than kill.
