home security question
I just moved into a house after having lived in apartments for 15ish years. So I've been conditioned to ignore all the footsteps and random noises from adjacent apartments, but now those noises should cause alarm. My kid, who basically never wakes up in the night, ran to the bathroom and I didn't even think about it until half a minute later. At that point I realized I should have at least been concerned for a split second before determining that they were little kid footsteps. Anyone have an idea how I can recondition myself to be alarmed by these movement noises? Thanks! via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1Y0gcO2
Whay is your gun cleaning kit for your CCW?
I bought this cheap ass kit from gander mountain and I'm regretting it now. I'm sitting here with a mountain of napkins, bore clothes, and CLP cleaning my guns covered in grease... Oh and a tooth brush. I forgot the God damn tooth brush.Anyone have any recommendations on cleaning kits? Also maybe some YouTube videos on good cleaning techniques? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1VZPAPs
Someone should design jeans that are an extra two inches longer from the waist to crotch.
Most jean designers these days design pants expecting people to wear them a little bit off of their waist. This does not help when I have to wear an IWB holster. My boys need some breathing room. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1Tcsq1U
A Blood's take on self-defense and assorted topics
What's up y'all. For those that don't browse gunnit or best gunnit, I'm a (former) blood from Detroit and Phoenix. I'm here to tell y'all about how to avoid being in a situation where you need to use a weapon to defend yourself, and should you fail at that, what to keep in mind. I've lived in 4820Die, South Phoenix, Iraq, Afghanistan, and my mother-in-law's. "Hostile" territory is just kinda home to me.What to do: Avoid the hood. Simple, right? Class over.Except some of us can't. We live/work/fuck/visit Tyrone Biggums in the hood. So what do we do then? Situational awareness. Know who the fuck is around you and why. You should try and overhear conversations. See what they're talking about. They aren't talking?Red flag. No, BIG ASS WARNING SIGN! WOO-WOO-WOO, SHADY SHIT! Dude's don't just stand in a group and not shoot the shit. That's when you start figuring out if they're sizing you up. Carry yourself like you've got dual M134s in your Zap holster. This making sense? No? Fuck.If there's "military-aged" males, either alone or in groups and you can't quite place why they're there, you should be worried. Not quite "hand on my pistol" worried, but you need to be really paying attention now. Condition Orange. So what should you do then? Carry yourself like you're not a target. Make them second guess jumping your ass. If you look like an easy target, you're inviting trouble. If you follow the same path day to day, watch for new shit. New people, new cars, new graffitti, new anything. If something doesn't feel right, that's millions of years of evolutionary advantage telling you "HEY BITCH, SOME SHIT'S 'BOUT TO GO DOWN. GET US OUTTA HERE. ALSO, SWING BY WENDY'S." Listen to it.Say you followed all that, and a crab still gets the jump on you and tells you to run your shit. What do you do? Get his attention off you. Find smething over his shoulder to repeatedly look at. Say "okay, I'mma slowly grab my wallet from my right pocket", and do it. But keep looking over his shoulder. Get him to look away from you. Then step, draw, shoot."Isn't that a very narrow example?"Yes. If by narrow you mean worked on 7 mile, Rawway, and Berks. Yes. Hey, I can just comment on what I know. Will it always work? Probably not. Which is why we learn to...IMPROVISE MOTHERFUCKERS. LEARN TO THINK ON YOUR FEET AND ADAPT. SHIT DON'T GO DOWN LIKE SHOOTING DRILLS. Learn how to come up with shit on the fly. This shit got rambly and is all over the place. Ask questions, I'll answer as best I can. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1O4Jtla
Glock 43 Holster

Legal implications of knife orientation in defensive use?
I've been told by a number of friends over the years, that when using a knife in self defense, holding the knife in a position so that the blade is held out and away from the thumb side of your fist is okay, but held the other way, so that the blade is held out and away from the pinky side of your fist, will be considered homicide, even in a self defense situation. I've never been able to find ANYTHING online about this, and it's always sounded like fucking bullshit to me. Is it?

A big Thank you to everyone here at /r/CCW
I've made a multitude of posts asking about different types of guns, different versions, different calibers, etc. And I finally made my choice on my first CCW gun. I ordered an HK P30SK v3 with the night sights and 3 mags for $670 at a local shop. Now just waiting until Thursday when it comes in and I can go grab it! Thank you all for your help! via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1X0msXP
Courthouse oops moment!
So a few weeks ago I had just gotten a new hybrid iwb holster. It's my first holster for my mp shield. I was used to a cheap nylon iwb holster with a plastic clip. My drivers license had expired so I had to stop by the courthouse to renew it. It's a pain to remove and reinsert in public so without thinkin I just removed my gun and placed it in the center console of my truck and walked inside. My county's courthouse just got rebuilt and now has a strict security to enter with metal detectors and the works. Well I took everything out of my pockets and placed it into the bowl and walked through knowing my belt buckl and steel toes would set it off. The security officer checked them and then ran the stick down my side and my holster set it off!!! I immediately raised my hands and apologized and said its empty you can check.i hadn't ever worried about it before and it's a leather and judged holster. But what I didn't think about was the metal bolts and plate for retention! Oops via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1Wy5503
Criminal mindset and other useful psychological info
I've seen people here talk about stuff like this. Like how people in general have a set of things they expect can happen, things they've planned for, and by going outside of that set of things you can increase their reaction time. (Or you can reduce your own reaction time by planning for different circumstances and being consciously aware of possibilities.)And how you can adopt a certain demeanor as a deterrent to attack, like how cops are sometimes assholes to project dominance and make it less likely someone will mess with them.Tactical psychology sorta stuff. What's a good book for reading about this? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1TCbipd

Second time carrying and I had to state I was carrying to some officers
Wall of text warning!I just thought I would share my story about my encounter with the police yesterday. Last week I got my holster in the mail, so I am now able to carry and last night I was doing it around the house to get used to it (only the second time because I go to college and don't go out much). My roommates decided that they were going to have a party last night, so they invited quite a few people over. Well of course living in an apartment complex, that didn't go well with the neighbors. Around 1 or so the police knock on our door telling us we need to stop the party and everyone needs to leave. My roommate starts arguing and gets taken to the car. During that time everyone at the party leaves.Well after that, three officers come back up to check out the situation. I answer the door with my other roommates, and in doing so I divulge that I am carrying a concealed weapon on me and haven't had a thing to drink all night and I can show them my license (Ohio requires it). The one officer responded with, "Cool, I am carrying too! I don't need to see anything." Then we sat there and talked for 15 minutes about various things. The one lady police officer sees we have a Guinea pig and starts talking to us about it and asks to pet it. She also notices the birds we have and talks about those. She also jokingly asks the other police officer if he wants to play a game of beer pong. After all the talking they leave and tell us to have a good night and not to have anymore loud parties.I am just sharing all of this to tell how my first experience was with talking to police officers while carrying. Also, I am sharing this to just say that police officers are normal humans like us who like to joke and pet cute animals. Overall it was a good experience and thought it was funny, so I thought I would share it with everyone here.TL;DR: Had to tell officers I was carrying and one said "Cool, me too!" Then we talked about fun stuff. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1TbRs19

Pouch/Holder for a mounted tactical light?
I own a TLR-2 and I'm trying to find a pouch for it when I'm carrying it with me. Any suggestions? All I've found is Bianchi Accumold (Elite) and I'm not sure how well that would work considering it's made for 2.25 in belts and your average gun belt and other accessories are typically between 1.5-1.75. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1N9vqA1
Hornady Critical Defense vs. Federal HST.
What are some pros and cons of the two aforementioned ammunitions? I'm considering switching up my carry ammo and I currently carry Federal HST. Just want to know if I should stick with what I have or go with the hornady. I've heard that the hornady would help in the case of a lot of clothing because if the plastic bit in the hollow point. Most comfortable and cool IWB for summer

Carrying while doing outside sales?
So my job involves doing in home estimates for people. Sometimes a house is full of contractors, and sometimes it's just a person by themselves.I have the appropriate license and equipment to conceal, but I feel a little weird with the idea of carrying into people's homes. At the same time, I don't want to end up in a sketchy situation without a means to protect myself.Anyone else face this and what do you do? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1VYpxIl

So I just got my HQL in MD so I can now buy a gun, moving to pa so going to be a carry gun. Shop near me has a used Glock 26 Gen3 for $425 and can get a new Glock 26 Gen 4 for $560.Looking for opinions, assuming the gen3 is in good shape, should I go with the gen3 used or should I spend the extra for the gen 4 new? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1pQ6NNl

11 y/o shoots home intruder with 9mm handgun, loaded with FMJ?
http://ift.tt/23elJ4U job kid thinking to defend his home, but as the story states he started shooting after the guy went outside and the gun we can assume parents leave loaded at home for these situations was loaded with FMJ ammo. For purposes of discussion:Hard to criticize a kid for not shooting when the perp was inside going past him and threatening the kid, but for productive purposes. How do we talk to our kids about being left home alone with a gun and if they have to use it? My first thought was what if the perp decided to try and take the gun from the kid, because kid didn't shoot at first. Finally, and maybe I'm ignorant: Why was that 9mm FMJ? Isn't that a stupid move on the parents' part? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1Szq69j
Ass backwards ccw/active shooter policy at my job
We aren't allowed to carry even if you work in the firearms department (like myself). Our active shooter policy is run hide fight, in the fight section it says to make an improvised weapon. When I asked the Toby of our store (technically works for corporate) about this he said it could be anything from a kayak oar to loading a gun on display.....yup, if theres a shooter we can grab ammo and load up.You'd think they'd rather have us use our own gun than grab company property. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1QFD4fU

Best Mag pouches and holders? What do you prefer and why? Open top vs Close flap? Nylon vs Leather? Velcro vs Button?
Figured we needed a good source for this on reddit. Leather or Nylon? Open top vs Closed flap? Velcro or Button? For on duty and EDC, what do you recommend and why? Feel free to toss in any personal recommendations as I'm looking for some. Preferably nothing over $35.Personally I prefer buttoned and leather. Easier/faster to get the flaps open and its rigid so it keeps everything in place better. I prefer closed top as there's less chance of losing a magazine or it getting dirty, and you don't have to worry about someone reaching for one easily cause they can see it. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1VWmEbB
Looking for an EDC belt around $50ish or less, any recommendations? What's better leather or nylon?
The title says it all. Leather or Nylon? Why?Any great belts that are around $50ish or less? Bout 1.5-1.75 in. I'm leaning towards leather as it looks more professional and cleaner, my concern with nylon is it fraying and fading more quickly. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1T9grlM

If a state recognizes another's conceal carry permits, what happens if the second state passes a Constitutional Carry law?
Could you still carry in the first state if you were visiting? Would your driver's license or other ID "become" your carry permit? Sorry if this is a stupid question, the recent passage of the constitutional carry bill through the MO house has me curious. Thanks! via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1Ti4H0H
How do you all break in new leather holsters?
So today I got in the mail a new holster for my CZ P-07. The first thing I noticed is its tight as hell so I began breaking it in. After massaging it a bit I tried some draws to loosen it up. It's not really getting anywhere though and the finish on my front sight and top slide is actually rubbing slightly. I'd rather that not happen, it's the reason I went with leather over kydex. I've read some things online about not using lubricants because you want the holster to not get too malleable. It's in a plastic bag in the holster for tonight to see if that helps. Any other reccomendations? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1ThQbGi
Let's try this again. Looking for a mid sized cc pistol

Considering AIWB carry for either G19 or XDS
Hey all,I've been carrying the normal strong hip side IWB for a while now and had no issues. I'm considering switching/trying to AIWB, for extra conceal ability. With this style I figure I won't really have to choose what I'm wearing, my slightly shorter/fitted shirts won't be an issue as they are with strong hip side. For those that do it, what are some of the challenges you encountered? What holsters do you recommend? How comfortable is sitting down, as I drive a desk all day (programmer) sitting is unfortunately a large portion of my day and if it's too uncomfortable I can't really do it.Thanks in advance! via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1VWJdwa
Question about Arizona reciprocity with Nevada
Hey All,I've been researching concealed carry for a few months and have decided it is something I'd like to pursue. I live in Las Vegas. As I understand it here, it usually takes nearly 4 months to get a concealed carry permit. If I also understand correctly, AZ permits are recognized in Nevada, so if you have an AZ permit you're good in Nevada. My question is this: I have a brother that lives in AZ. I've heard AZ processes permits much faster. Is this the case? If so, how long is the typical wait? Would it make sense for me to go to AZ, stay with my brother for a few days, apply in AZ, get my AZ permit and just skip dealing with the long waits in Nevada all together? Does anyone have experience doing this? What I'm hoping to achieve here is getting around the long wait in Nevada. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1N3psQY
Getting the Mrs on board
I recently took my CCW course in Kansas. I grew up with guns so I feel like they are may another tool. I have a hammer for putting in nails and a fun for defending my family. The Mrs on the other hand is far more nervous about this. She doesn't feel there is ever a need to carry, bad stuff won't happen here and me having a fun will just make bad things happen. As such she is against my getting the actual permit and actively carrying.Any words of wisdom in overcoming her objections? Thanks via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1TgsPAJ

Carrying a gun *and* OC spray?
Looking for advice and discussion. So, I carry a concealed firearm. I also carry pepper spray. My mentality is I don't want to just carry a hammer and treat everything like a nail. I can think of a number of instances where I'd want to have a less lethal option available to me - aggressive stray dog, a violent drunk who is dangerous but not quite a deadly threat just yet, maybe a lone unarmed mugger who hasn't caught me flat footed...that kind of thing, obviously up to your individual judgment and circumstances. And if the spray fails, and the situation continues to escalate, I have the lethal force option available. But does carrying a lethal force tool and a less lethal tool open me up to any potential legal issues? What's the current prevailing thought on this? I'm just worried that in some kind of defensive situation, the issue of why I did or didn't use my pepper spray in this particular circumstance might become a sticking point.Do y'all carry pepper spray when you carry a gun? Why or why not? What's your thoughts? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1UjjVY2
City owned lake in Texas
So, I was looking to get back into fishing after a long hiatus and thought I might go out to the lake and camp out for the weekend and fish.Went to the website for the lake, and under rules and regulations they have a big notice that Firearms are prohibited on the property. This lake is owned and operated by the city that I live in. No Army Corp of Engineers involved whatsoever. This by definition makes it government owned, and not on the prohibited places list, therefore they cannot ban concealed carry right?I'm thinking that's just aimed at keeping drunk yahoos from bringing guns out there and being unsafe and doesn't apply to CHL holders. I'm going to contact the city and see what they say, just wanted to double check my interpretation of the law. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/24miP0w
Opinions needed on carry rig
So up until now I have been carrying my shield at about 4 o'clock in a Galco King Tuk everyday at work and anywhere I go really. I am a General Manager at a restaurant and we had new dress codes come down from corporate for Salaried managers. We now have to wear our shirts tucked in. I can tuck with my current holster, and In most industries it would be fine for the clips to show over my belt, but a kitchen is a special beast in that, it is extremely close quarters with everyone basically being on top of each other.I wear a 5.11 operator belt, which has Velcro on the extra strap, that can go over clips of a holster. So I was looking for recommendations for a single or even double clip AIWB tuckable holster that I could hide the clips under the extra strap of belt, and still tuck. I was also thinking of getting a smaller gun that I could pocket carry if the whole AIWB thing didn't work out.Thank you! via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1WsEPEq

Considering: Glock 43 vs Ruger LC9S
Hey r/ccw, I haven't posted or read much here, but I got out and shot some single-stack 9s today, and am looking at picking one up for concealed carry. My two favorites were the Glock 43 and the Ruger LC9S. I didn't much care for a few of the others I shot (the XDs and the M&P Shield weren't as good of a fit for me), but I feel a bit torn between these two.My biggest concern with the Ruger LC9S (I would be getting the pro model, but what I shot was a rental, and the standard model) is that while shooting it, the magazine dropped a couple times. This wasn't me hitting the mag release, in fact, I thought I was losing it until I found that when loaded, the magazine could be "wiggled" out of the gun.I haven't heard of this being an issue when I was looking into different 9s I could try out today, so it was a small point of concern for me. Is this a common issue, or perhaps just an issue with this used rental weapon the range had? Unfortunately, I don't have another LC9S sitting around to try. Is this fixable, or, since I grip this in a way that "rips" the mag out (that's where my pinky rests) sometimes when I shoot, should I lean towards the glock?Aside from that issue, the only thing I don't like about the Glock is the slide release. If this was just an odd issue that I had with the Ruger today, than I'd probably go with the LC9S, but if that's a more common thing than I can find on the internet, perhaps I'll lean towards the glock, even though it looks to be a little more expensive.Any other thoughts/advice are welcome too, as this will be my first CC pistol. I'm looking to carry IWB as well, and have barely started to research holsters as well. o.o via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1NVu7zn
State Law, County Approval, Cluster
In my state the CCW permits are issued by the state but require county sheriff's approval. I have had a CCW permit but went in to re-certify and was told since my previous CCW was issued in another county I would have to pay the new fee etc. With this being a state permit this doesn't make much sense to me. Along these same lines my state allows suppressors and from my limited understanding (new law) it will be a federal stamp approved by the state with a sheriff's final say. If I decide to move 10 miles down the road am I going to be in a predicament in which I will have to sell my suppressor to live in a different county?Anybody with any experience or thoughts would be appreciated. If I should be looking in a different area please point me in the right direction. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1TxL5Iy
