Practical impact weapons?

I'm aware de-escalation/running away is generally your best option, but when push comes to shove, I'd like to have something with me. I live in Canada, so I'm aware of the consequences of using a weapon in self-defense. I've done some MMA if that matters.

So far I've been debating on a flat sap (7") or a small baton (5" collapsed). While both could kill someone, the sap is probably less lethal (cause it's flat) and more conceable in your hand, but you have to get in close to use it. Baton if you're not careful you might end up killing them, but if someone pulls out a knife or something that wouldn't really be a concern for me. Baton is also probably more imposing, which is a good and bad thing (might scare them off, but if someone records it you look like the aggressor). Then again, if I'm ever in a life of death situation, I doubt there would be anyone around to record it to begin with.

I know it's generally better to just use tools as impact weapons (flashlight, keys, w.e), but I don't know how effective that would be.
