How Many Reloads Should A Private Citizen Carry? (ASP BITs)

https://youtu.be/P0tst9-_pPs(Sorry but for some reason I can't post the video as a direct link, so you'll have to click on the link above to watch the video)Active Self Protection's John talks about how often he sees a private citizen need a reload in the 40k+ defensive uses he's watched (spoiler, it's zero times) and does a little math to rationalize why he personally feels a reload isn't worth carrying.I found it a good watch and good food for thought. Before anyone busts on me without watching the video, he says multiple times he's just giving you info and not telling you what to do; so if you wanna still carry a spare or many spare then go ahead. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/SqxXi1a

I need something to defend myself and am debating if I should get a taser x26 that I found a really good deal, or a small 6 shot revolver, what would be the best to keep me safe?

Left house without gun, big mistake.

I’ll start by saying that my neighborhood has become significantly more violent over the past few years. Couple of months ago there was a murder at the house directly across the street from mine, (wife and I actually heard the shot) and a couple of months before that there was a shooting at my neighborhood entrance. Couple of months before this, a couple was shot in their car in the apt complex next to my neighborhood..we hear gunshots on a semi-nightly basis, sometimes it wakes us up. We are currently looking for a new house and don’t plan on being here much longer..hoping to be out by this time next year..Anyways.. yesterday I took my dog to a local park about 3 miles from my house.. it’s not a great area, but not the worst either so I thought. I go there at least twice a week, and send my wife there alone to walk the dog when I am working. Usually if I’m local like this and don’t plan on being gone for more than 30 min I won’t bother carrying.I get out of my car, leash my dog and the first thing I heard was a group of people (two cars, 3 black dudes, 3 Hispanic girls) arguing. One of the guys was extremely pissed off, stomping the ground and hitting his own car.Didn’t think much of it, just walked the opposite direction.I get to the other side of the park, ~100 yards away, and I hear the girls in hysterics. I look back and one of the guys had a gun pointed at the others head in the middle of the street. The girls are crying, yelling at this dude, telling him to not do it, let him be, chill out etc.I watch for a second, and I’m thinking I’m for sure about to witness a fucking murder.I turn around and continue walking in the opposite directionI hear some noise behind me..I turn around, and two of them are literally 10 foot behind me, yelling at each other. (Pretty sure it was The guy who had the gun pointed at him). We made eye contact and they turn back around and head towards back where they came from.At this point I’m just mad at myself for not having my gun, or any other protection on me. “Just a quick Sunday night walk in the park before sunset”..I continue walking in the opposite direction, look back and two of them are running back in my direction again..I wanted absolutely no part of this, so I stepped beside some bushes where I thought they couldn’t see me, called my wife and told them to call the cops. The two dudes turned back around to talk for a minute, I left the bushes, and they start running in my direction again..Car pulls up and the two guys walk up to the car and start arguing, guy is hitting the car, yelling about whatever the fuck, and this time it’s like 20 fucking foot to my right, it’s like I can’t escape this shit, and I’m completely unarmed. WTF.I just kept walking, again wanting no part of this, and trying to mind my own business pretending to be oblivious to what’s going on.Long story short, Power walked around the block, back to my car, and spoke with police later on who thanked my wife and I for calling it in.I feel like a complete fool, and a total pussy. It’s 1am, I can’t sleep and I keep replaying it in my head. What if this dude came after me with a gun? What should I have done differently? My wife didn’t even know where I was, what if something happened to me?Lesson learned, I’ll be carrying pretty much every single fucking time I leave the house from now on and I can’t wait to leave this fucking shit hole. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/VdCrnbz

The 21 Foot Rule (Tueller Rule)

Since taking Way of the Pistol at Tactical Response this philosophy has been on my mind a lot.For those that don't know the Tueller Rule or Tueller Drill is derived from an experiment that Tueller tried among other officers. He came to the conclusion that an officer on average can draw their pistol in 1.5 seconds and an officer can sprint about 21ft in 1.5 seconds. This is referring to the notion that an attacker with a knife can close the distance within 21ft (7 yards) before you get your gun out. But there is a huge misconception with this rule or drill. Not everyone can draw their pistol within 1.5 seconds AND make an incapacitating shot. Further, not everyone can sprint 21ft in 1.5 seconds and not everyone needs 1.5 seconds to sprint 21ft.In Advanced Fighting Pistol at Tactical Response (TR) they have students perform the drill. Some of the students barely made it 5 feet before the shooter got the shot off. Others, myself included, made it much farther than 21 feet before we heard the shot go off.Side note: Yes this was performed in a safe manor, relax. The point of what I'm saying is, there's a lot of misconceptions that are taken out of context that isn't beneficial to us laymen. For instance a cop tells us, "A bad guy with a knife can close the distance within 21ft before you get your gun out." While that isn't entirely false that isn't entirely true. I'm fairly certain someone like Jerry Miculek could make the bad guy take the room temperature test at a closer distance. However, can you? This is partly why at TR they have you side step, flank left/right, or move backwards when you draw because naturally you wouldn't just stand there like an idiot. But also any slight movement requires the attacker to think, that slight delay however small may just be enough to give you the edge. But its also to very important to work on your draw. Having a full firing grip before the gun comes out of the holster and when you present you have a consistent sight alignment and sight picture.I would highly recommend testing this yourself. Get a friend, a stop watch, or even a shot timer and set a par time and mark off seven yards and run it your self. See how far you can run it, see how far your friend can run it before you get your gun out and have a shot on target. Once you do it it'll either be an ego check or an ego booster. If your friend is heavyset you may want to find another friend to run it so you get a better gauge.I've also been reading this great book that talks about this drill and the legal aspects of self defense encounters that you can get for about $20. It's also free if you want your email box spammed and there's an audio book version. Here via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/MdW32U5

Had a gun pulled up on me

So, yesterday I had a gun pull up on me in a public park. I wanna know if there was something I could have done differently and how I handled it was correct or not. What should I do next? Is there a chance I was followed or I could face issues in the future because of this?

It was 2:30 am at night in a public park and I was there with my friend walking down. A person on a scooter hit me on the head and rode away. We didn't do anything, but saw that guy coming back and just called him out, (shouldn't have done that in retrospect). He stops walks up to us asking you got problem. We just ask why he hit for no reason. He pulls up a gun on us (at my face with finger on trigger) saying he's on 24 months. Three others joined and surrounded us aswell.

Me and my friend try to deescalate and since we were also on our bike move back and run away. They say "run run" or something like that. We biked at full speed. Went through a street where we know there are lots of cops, and seperated on our bikes to meet up at a common spot before heading home. All that time we kepts on looking back checking if someone was following us, we didn't see any scooters anywhere on our way back. We went inside the appartment complex. Stood there hidden for a minute and then went inside the house after making sure we didn't see anyone.

Should we have informed the police? Should we now inform the police? I honestly don't want anything to do with this anymore. The three guys were part of the same community (not gonna mention which for anonymity), would they be part of some gang which could make trouble for us in the future? What should I do next. I don't want anything to do with this.

LPT: If you have to shoot someone wearing body armor and a center mass shot does not incapacitate them, aim for their pelvic girdle.

Body armor is designed to cover the center of mass and protect vital organs. Most soft and hard body armor does not extend much past the ribs. If in a scenario a gunshot to the center of mass does not incapacitate, aim lower not higher. The reason for this is that while a gunshot wound to the head is highly likely to incapacitate, it is much harder to successfully make a headshot than it is to hit below center of mass in the pelvic/groin region. In most situations, a bullet impacting the pelvic girdle will significantly incapacitate. When the pelvic girdle is shattered or significantly damaged it becomes almost impossible to stand, walk, or run without support. After a successful pelvic girdle shot, you can move to cover and assess the situation with the knowledge that the person who was shot is not going to be moving anywhere anytime soon without help and the threat they pose is significantly reduced.I am writing this in light of the death of Officer Aaron Salter in the Buffalo mass shooting. Officer Salter valiantly confronted the shooter and successfully shot the shooter in the back. Unfortunately, the shooter was wearing body armor and was unharmed. In a scenario like this, the next steps would be to aim for the pelvic girdle and once the shooter was partially incapacitated to move to cover and assess the situation. Officer Salter unfortunately lost his life due to the shooter's use of body armor, but hopefully in the future others will know what do to next. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/4t57Am9

Ides Of March Protocol

Hello, after the events of Uvalde, Parkland, and Columbine, I feel like the accepted protocol of "Wait for the cops to come save us" is... unwise. I thought of developing a parallel approach that empowers students and teachers to protect themselves. This will serve three purposes:

1)It might actually stop a shooter

2)It will help the students and teachers feel less afraid by putting some power in their hands.

3)It will change the perception of schools from pens full of sheep to tanks full of sharks. Potentially attackers will shift to easier prey.

The elements of the protocol are 2+ individuals. And one or more pairs of adult scissors.
Brutus- 80 kg+/130 lbs+ Would keep the shooter's gun out of play for five seconds or more.

One or more Cassius-40kg+ Cassius would go to work on the shooters eyes and neck. If there is more than one Cassius, they will target the kidneys, illiac, and renal arteries from behind.

I am not, unfortunately, an expert in hand-to-hand. I am asking one of the experts here to make a video illustrating how best to secure disarm a shooter with the minimum of skill.

I fully recognize that the odds of this being successfully executed are low, but even low odds are better than being slaughtered like livestock. Further, it has the psychological effect of giving teachers and students something to do during code red drills and letting potential shooters know that the game is now harder.

Thank you for any help.

Does hugging an attacker stop their punches?

I think I heard of this if an attacker is throwing wild punches really close to you and you go for a hug to stop their momentum. Sounds strange but the more I think about it the more it sounds legit. I jusr want clarity on what it is and when you should use it.

CCW Recommendation

Just moved to SC and looking for my first CCW. 5’11” Athletic Build with medium sized hands looking for an all year gun especially in the hot SC summers. Something i can get a near full size purchase on but still conceal appendix in shorts and a tee. Thanks! via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/lLObutW

If you could only have 3 handguns forever, what would they be?

XS Sights

This will likely be a pretty controversial topic but hear me out.I first started using XS Big Dot sights back around 2010 when my father purchased my pistol for my 18th birthday. Pistol in question was a Gen 4 G23.After very little research I went to the gun store to buy some sights and have them installed and I got whatever was the cheapest which was XS Big Dot sights.I used these for several years and sold that gun and never used them again. I hated them. They were fast on target but I couldn’t hit anything past 15 yards because the guy at the store just slapped them on willy nilly.I took a training class several weeks ago and in that class included a force on force class. The sim guns we used in the class all had Big Dot sights. And I was immediately sold AGAIN. They are quick on target, easy to track under recoil, the big white or yellow golf ball of a front sight is perfect in the dark/low light. These sights are designed strictly for self defense. However they can be very accurate if installed correctly. Yes very accurate. Hitting a full size silhouette at 100 yards 17/17 times, accurate. The thing about installing them is you have to insure that they are centered in the dovetail as much as possible. A friend helped me install them and we just eyeballed it and they’re only off center by .003”.I installed them on my G17.3 and my G19.2 and it has reinstilled my confidence in using iron sights. For the better part of 3 years I’ve been carrying and shooting with an optic but now with the Big Dot sights I’m equally as confident in my abilities with these sights as I am with a red dot.If you have an older gun or a new gun with stock sights you don’t like you should consider these big dot sights. I’ve heard these sights being stated as an “analog red dot.” And I couldn’t agree more. Everything a bout red dots that make shooting easier can also be done with these sights.Thank you for coming to my Ted talk. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/Ezb6AYq

Possible mugging in a park while feeding pigeons

I'm 23 year old from Chile, currently living in the capital.

For the past 3 years, I've been seeing how the criminality has been on the rise and cripplingly getting near to most areas of society, from the physical spaces in it or the language being used. The political turmoil alongside the tensions in the health as well as the economical issues only exacerbate this.

I'm from a good part of the city. This means that I don't have to worry about shots being fired during the day or can go out carrying two items from a store without worrying that someone will take this away from me, not so much that I live in a palace or that my family never had to pay rent. Of course, this sort of lifestyle eventually sticks to my gestures, my drives and my speech in real life. The fact of being from another ethnicity only highlights this even more.

For this past two years, my mental health has suffered a tremendous degree, and something that I've been doing to regain my sanity, it's the last thing in the title of this post. Seeing how this creatures behave, and trying to find complexity in a simple thing such as a group of pigeons has brought me great joy. It used to be something that I used to do with more around 4 years ago. When I feed the pigeons, I generally get them to get into my hand even without bread in it, and this of course, attracts the attention of people. Given that it's a "safe area" which is also near a subway station, I often just get stares of bystanders and sometimes, people come to talk to me about life; sometimes kids will approach me and start feeding the pigeons with me while I their parents talk to me. I can't emphasize enough how aside of the pigeons being quite the spotlight of the activity, it's slowly becoming the human interaction I get while feeding the pigeons, that it starts to become more memorable. The warmth and the humanity which often carry the conversations I've had with them are forever stored in my psyche, in a tightly secured safe.

Around 3pm, after church, I went to feed some pigeons near the park. I was riding my bike, so I just couldn't refuse entertaining that idea not only with my imagination and my brain, but my legs and my bike. Shortly after arriving there, there was this one pigeon which that for the past 2 weeks remembers me. He's white with many different colored spots in it and he would get right into my hand when he sees me. Minutes later, a couple approached me with their son. The son might have been around 5 to 7 years old, no more nor less. He was perplexed by the pigeons and he started following them, so I decided to give the lil guy a some bread I was carrying. It was real sweet to see him trying to feed those pigeons while sharing that great moment with his parents. For me, moments like this are akin to several frames of a movie which have the right meaning, color pallet, angles and motion to it. It's a gift to the eyes and the soul. After the son finished feeding the pigeons bread, the three went away. It seemed that they were either from Venezuela or Colombia. We've had a lot of immigration for the past 4 to 5 years.

Some time later, around 15 minutes of just listening to the music coming from my earphones and just feeding the flock of pigeons, this guy comes out of nowhere. He's around 40, high on something and approaches me carrying a beer bottle of around 1 liter in is hand.

"So you're feeding pigeons huh?"

"Yeah"

"You think this is all a game?"

"....."

"I know you saw me coming from the back of the park"

"Sure"

"You're feeding bread to this pigeons, because you haven't lacked bread a single day of your life."

"...."

"You're feeding this things, and you know how they call em? Rats of the sky because of their disease and all....you know jack shit about life"

He got closer and closer to me, while he had something on his jacket that he was gonna pull out. Knowing this and already having been mugged before years ago, I decided to get my bike and simply go.

Knowing things like this are only going to get worse with time near my city and the total feeling of cowardice and impotence coming from my side, being a 23 year old man, is demoralizing.

Where can I start learning how to defend myself? Was this the right approach?

I just don't wanna act like a bitch no more.

Question about safes and ND

I'm going to become the most popular person on this Reddit with all these posts.Basically I have been holstering and unholstering every day with my firearm. However, I read I shouldn't do that because it increases the risk of a ND. I'm a bit curious on how if you follow all the steps? Also, how do you all check your holsters when you are unholstering and holstering to make sure nothing is in the holster, or that the firearm is going in correctly? One last thing, do any of you have any recommendations on gun safes, preferably on the smaller side like a lockbox, that can fit the holster and the gun in it? Mine is a bit too small, but I still want it to be easy to carry around.Sorry for all the questions! Just trying to learn and be safe. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/9KZU04p

I'm 20 and I'm a pretty small guy. I'm 5'6" and I'm just a bit overweight at I think 190 lbs. Physically I am pretty weak, say for lifting heavy things maybe. I honestly hate it so much when people say that men can walk out at night without any fear, while I'm terrified of even walking out in the day time.

What I do is that I have a folding pocket knife that's around 4 inches in length on my belt loop. I know that it'd be better if it was clipped to my pocket for quick access but I honestly dont want to risk someone seeing it. What I've wanted to do was get some pepper spray and learn how to use it, then when I turn 21, learn how to use a concealed carry handgun. I live in Florida btw and the pocket knife is legal.

I have defended myself before from larger people back in high school, through biting them incredibly hard and punching them in the nose, but I doubt I could really be able to do that so some drunk 6'5" guy. I'm scared of having a girlfriend then someone tries to do something like beat me up in front of her, or try to hurt her. Especially since like I said, I'm literally a small guy and would have no chance against a large man, maybe even an average man.

I guess the best thing for me is start learning to box, since it'd be the best if I do have to fight some large person and I'm not gonna be able to take them down by wrestling.

I'm just so tired of constantly being anxious about my safety, especially since as a man, it feels pathetic and hopeless because of how weak I am.

Any thoughts? Ideas? Thank you.

CCW Insurance Question

There’s been a lot of discussion recently on CCW insurance and which one to go with. My question is how do thing pan out if you defend yourself at home from a break in lets say. Do you still use insurance?Do you handle the police interaction the same? Are charges less likely to be filed against you? Im just genuinely curious because i think there is a difference between being in public and being at home should you need to defend yourself. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/XnuVGxA
