If you can’t handle a threat in “x” shots

I just wanted to start a general conversation around this commonly heard phrase, especially since the conversation around CCW always circles around capacity and how many rounds we can jam into as small a package as possible.I was checking out some new potential carry options and really liked one pistol in particular but the grip size was so small and magazine release button placement required me to substantially break my grip to hit it (maybe with it breaking in over time I wouldn’t need to but the mag release was essentially in the interphalangeal joint of my thumb) and I told the guy at the counter that was the main reason I wouldn’t want to buy it. He kinda scoffed and said the mag release button doesn’t matter because I’d only need to use the rounds in the gun and if I can’t deal with a threat in “x” shots then it wouldn’t matter anyways.I understand the statistics, have seen the ASP videos, know that reloads in a dgu are insignificant in the outcome for almost every single encounter but my point is that if I can have a gun where I can use all functions without breaking my grip, that’s obviously better than a gun I have to dance around with in my hands to manipulate. Furthermore, the same argument applies for carrying a spare mag if you’re only going to use the rounds in your gun - the likelihood of needing one is small but mags are a common point of failure and it takes no effort to carry a spare one on your person. I don’t know about most people, but if I need to use my weapon, I’d like to be able to top off when the main threat is down and not have 1 round left in my gun.My opinion is that anyone who resorts to the phrase “if I can’t stop a threat in “x” shots” doesn’t really care that much about the outcome of a defense encounter. The whole “I tried but it just didn’t work out” attitude is defeatist, means you don’t train enough (there’s never an amount that is enough) and is just plain stupid. You may as well carry a 2 shot derringer and be comfortable and not worry about it. I have a 5 shot j-frame and every time I want to wear it because it’s more comfortable, I ask myself if I had to be in a gunfight that day, is that what I want to defend myself with and then put it back in the safe and pick a larger gun.I don’t think everyone needs to carry a full size gun with 50+ rounds as part of their EDC, but a spare mag and the mindset that you’re going to do whatever it takes should you need to is basic. I’d rather die with extra bullets on my hip that an empty gun in my hand and using the best firearm I own and not one that was the smallest/most comfortable to carry/not as easy to manipulate via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/3tb3p0S
