Pepper spray indirectly as defense

This may sound stupid but I recently sprayed my pepper spray in the bathroom to test it out and it was incredibly strong. It had a burning sensation in the bathroom for a good 20 minutes and I was far away from where the spray hit. It had me coughing, nose feeling weird and my eyes slightly burning. This had me wondering if using pepper spray indirectly would work as defense indoors.

What I mean by this is if there were to be an intruder but I didn’t have a gun would it be possible to drench the hallway walls in pepper spray to delay or possibly distract the intruders from getting to the bedroom? I’m not sure if this is a dumb idea or not but I looked it up and didn’t see much of an answer. This wouldn’t be to completely get rid of intruders but it would be to delay the inevitable and give me and my family time to hide, maybe even long enough for a cop to show.

(Yes I do plan to get my gun license soon btw)
