What are good home defense alternatives?

I grew up around guns, learned gun safety at a young age, and have felt safe around guns for as long as I can remember. Years before I knew my wife, she was a victim of gun violence. Thus, not at all cool with a gun in the house. I completely respect her feelings on the subject, and I don’t have a need or desire for guns, so it’s not a problem for us. However, I’ve often thought about alternatives for self defense. In a gun free home, what would you keep nearby for defense from intruders?

What martial arts should you learn for self defense?

The only reason why I would ever learn martial arts is because of self defense. I don't wanna look good or flex or anything. I just need to defend myself, while being injured the least and protect at the same time my wife. Thanks.

Which martial arts style would suit me?

I'm an ectomorph — very thin and tall. Right now, I'm trying to gain some mass, and in the near future, I want to get into martial arts, not for competition, but for self-defense. I've narrowed it down to Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu (in case the fight goes to the ground). Is this the right choice? What martial arts would you choose in my place?

Looking for advice. I am going on a solo hike this weekend. I’ve gone on solo hikes before, but I have PTSD and am worried to go alone without my dog. She’s getting older and it’s a 6.5 mile trail. What should I know about self defense? I am very small. Thank you.

Is Previous fight experience enough for self defense

I have fought before in different disciplines over the years, boxing, sub wrestling, tkd etc

The older I get the more I lose interest in the gym setting, I still keep up with fitness I'm my own gym 4 days a week, I still work the heavy bag and do mitt work with a partner but I don't have an interest in fighting again for sport, recently had children my mind is just on other things

The only thing I'm interested in doing now is protecting my family, I just don't want to freeze up without sparring if anything were to happen, I can obviously still throw a punch but not competition level cardio anymore.

Anyone have any advice on what the best thing to do is? Is my previous experience enough to get me out of trouble or do you guys think it's something that needs constant sparring to keep on top of.

Thanks for any advice

I don't have any experience in fighting

I've hit the gym for couple of years but haven't gain much significant weight

Fear controls me like crazy despite that I have anger burst episodes home alone thinking I can out take anyone who might come for me

How to control this fear? Fear of that striking someone might not cause any harm

Like these nightmares where your punches are slow and weak

I'm devastated...

How to protect myself as a young female college student

Hi all. I go to a major university in FL, I live away from my parents, and recently I have been hearing all the scary things about my area. Police reports of men peaking into college girl’s apartment windows (thank god I live a few stories up), trying to open locked apartments, following girls around Target and into their car, snapping pictures of them, etc.

I’ve come to the realization that I have nothing to protect myself and that needs to change. My girlfriend has old shitty keychain pepper spray in her purse, but that’s it. I’m 20, and my ideal goal is to get my concealed carry for a gun. I keep telling my parents that I don’t want a trip to the bar for my 21st but gun lessons, lol.

What can I do now? Should I get a taser? Knife? Pepper spray? All 3? When is the best situation to use each? Thank you in advance for your help.

What are the safest places to punch someone in self-defense?

I'm a decent bit larger than most people in my environment (I do weight training but not martial arts), so I'm not very concerned about "winning the fight" as I am with not accidentally causing excessive injury or killing someone in an altercation. So, I want to ask about places where you can hit someone to create a big enough opening, so I may disengage if I wasn't able to do so before the person has already attacked me.

My most likely situation is that I get into a fight in a bar or restaurant due to an argument with another patron, who is possibly somewhat drunk, definitely unarmed, often slightly foolish and stubborn but not trying to kill me, and about 20-30% smaller than I am. My goal is to leave the fight safely, with as little damage to my opponent as possible. If I can punch the person once, get him to stop grabbing me, or to be gasping or vomiting for a short moment, that's a good enough result for me to leave safely.

Is punching the abdomen generally the best way to do this? It can cause enough pain, sometimes vomiting if my opponent has been drinking/eating, and it's relatively unlikely to cause permanent damage...? or is it actually highly dangerous?

I think going for the head is a bit too dangerous, probably? It certainly has a high chance to look bloody should the police be involved later. On the other hand, punching the arms or legs would be somewhat ineffective (or occasionally too effective if a joint is broken) so probably not those places either? Chest is basically worse abdomen because there are breakable ribs rather than squishy internal organs, so again, probably just punch the abdomen?

I'm also curious if I should discount grappling in favor of punching, because the environment can be chaotic and if I grapple I have much less control in what happens. Even if I do something as light as just shoving the person, what if he lands on a table with hot food on it or a beer bottle that shatters, for example? I also think grappling is not as effective in creating a clear exit condition for me compared to punching. I don't know if this is indeed the case though, or if I should actually prefer grappling to punching if my goal is to avoid accidentally causing permanent injury.

Thank you very much for reading the post, and for any thoughts on the matter, or your experience with self-defense against smaller opponents.

Invisawear usability

Hi all! I’m considering buying InvisaWear, and I’m trying to determine from real people their experiences/thoughts on the jewelry.

I’ve seen mixed reviews about the Bluetooth range and the subscription fees. If you own/owned one:

  • Do you actually wear it every day, or only for "high-risk" situations (night runs, first dates, etc.)?
  • Have you ever had issues with it staying connected to your phone?
  • Do you need to always have the app open? Is this frustrating?
  • Does the peace of mind justify the cost of the device and the ADT subscription?

Thanks for your opinions! Feel free to share your opinions on safety-tech jewelry in general as well.

Learning “bad words” in a language for self protection

When I first moved here, English was my third language and I didn’t understand a lot. I later found out I was being bullied in 8th grade and had no idea because I couldn’t understand what people were saying.

Now I'm in 11th grade and am learning Spanish, and I asked a friend about a bad word just to make sure I know what it means. She seemed confused about why I’d want to learn that because I never use bad words.

Am I wrong for thinking it’s important to understand insults in a language, even if you never plan to use them???

As a Dad, how can I protect my wife and children while traveling?

I have my Permit to Carry, but don’t enjoy carrying a handgun on me. And I travel a lot, so a handgun is often not an option.

Is there something else I can have on me or wear that could help in a moment of self defense/protection? Especially while traveling.

I recently got into a scary altercation in Puerto Rico while on vacation. I was buckling my 3 kids into the back of our rental car, and fortunately kept eyes on the back of my head, and locked the car and drove off while an aggressive local tried to jump me.

My family and I got away unscathed, but it made me realize that I was a moron for not having SOMETHING on me. And made me realize how quickly something can happen.

What do people recommend? Not trying to make this a post about “weapons”, but more so, what can I do as a Dad to protect my wife and children?

not the ones that shoot the prongs and not the cattle flash light one, i need it to fit in a jacket pocket and preferably have some sort of switch for easy on- off without accidentally activating it.

pew pews cause to much damage for my use case and blades dont have that “listen up” effect.

in store is sweet but online order is cool too, overnight shipping wouldn't be objected to.

purely for self defence purposes. some old friends have been getting a little too comfortable and friendly if ya catch my drift.

The small purchase that made me feel safe walking home again

I never thought I'd be that person who carries pepper spray. I used to think it was a bit paranoid. But last summer changed everything for me. I was walking home from my friend's place around 10 PM, a route I'd taken a hundred times. This guy started following me, matching my pace, getting closer. My heart was pounding. I picked up speed, he picked up speed. I crossed the street, he crossed too. I ended up running the last three blocks home and practically threw myself through my apartment door. The next morning, I was still shaky. My roommate sat me down and said, Look, I know it feels dramatic, but just get something. Anything that makes you feel less helpless. She was right. I didn't want to live scared, but I also didn't want to feel that vulnerable again. I started researching and got overwhelmed - there are SO many options, and the prices at local stores were wild ($30-40 for a tiny canister?). A coworker mentioned she'd ordered a multipack from Alibaba for her college-aged daughters which was way cheaper for the same specs. I was skeptical about quality at first, but she showed me the ones she got and they looked identical to the name-brand stuff. I ended up ordering a 3-pack gel formula (the gel is supposed to be better than spray because it doesn't blow back at you in the wind). It cost me like $15 total. It's been almost a year now. I've never had to use it (thank God), but two of my friends have gotten their own after I told them about my experience. One keeps hers in her car, another in her gym bag. I'm not saying everyone needs pepper spray, but if you've ever had that sick feeling walking alone at night, or that moment where you think what would I actually do if…, maybe it's worth considering. It's not about living in fear. It's about living with one less thing to fear.

Just got my first taser and need advice abt self defense as a woman

Hey! So I'm a 21 year old gal who is wanting to start going out to bars and such and so I bought a discrete stun gun/taser. It's called a Pain Pen and claims to be about 25,000,000 volts. Am I gonna be able to bring this into bars or clubs with me? Is there anything I should know about how to use it optimally if it comes down to that?

If i can't actually bring it into bars with me, is pepper spray a better option? Or something else? For reference I live in California.

Can you afford to defend yourself

To make a long story short, I realized today that I can’t afford to defend myself. If a situation occurs and you use your CCW to defend yourself can it be done without having CCW insurance especially if they choose not to defend you. Do I have to have 50k or more for my freedom? Can you afford the arrest let alone deal with being incarcerated until your case can be heard. If anyone has unfortunately experienced this please share.

Trainer: #1 Weapon is Psychological Warfare

If you haven't been able to avoid all contact, that is. Because if you managed just one hit at getting in their head, every effort is less successful.

First goal is doubt, a many wins over them as you can get.

Second is either paranoia or calm self-assurance, whichever they're further from. The though well-applied doubt reducing the stickiness of their original positions should make this easier, it's best to approach obliquely or non seriously in a way you haven't used yet. Pump up, deflate, pump up, counteract even more. Soothe the mental wound, then add acid, mix and match a little. Or maybe sing-song or sweetly whisper your poison to what they're sure they need or do hold dear. The notion is distrusting their reality. Technically, that's also true for self-assurance to the other type, but that you're trying to help them replace their antisocial and self-destructive ideas with nice, pleasant things instead.

Third, fear/terror or calm/peace. Early on, you can try exploiting a trope or common phobia. better you can embody one that gets them. DO NOT apply a fear at every opportunity (except if you think this is thr last push or if less exposure isn't working). That would make things predictable and limit your ability to increase the level of distress. I was told on average, not fewer than 20% of opportunities but not more than 2 in 3. Roughly. But the key is inconsistency. In most cases, once sensitized, rarity punctuated with bursts of actively applied fear increases distress. Never knowing when the shoe will drop or horror to unbearability will come. It is much easier to win against a once confident, now broke attacker. On the other hand calmness is probably best applied at first uncommonly and slowly becoming more and more often unless the subject rebels.

My course was created specifically for me by a police officer with a keep interest in adaptive self-defense. For the very good reason that strangers kept doing things to me, fairly undeterred by those around me, from a full Baptist dinner hall to a parent in front of me and a policeman on the other free side. IIRC, I wasn't to be officially taught measures of physical counter-response till I was 5. But there was exception for where to apply things I didn't need to be taught. In particular, biting. So when fullsome physically active measures came around, how make even an innocuous non-breaking bites terrifying was first on the list. While human bites are medically hazardous, they aren't generally immediately scary. And cutting bites are hazardous for the biter, too, exposing you to diseases of the bitten as well as potentially dental trauma. Bites that just bleed and bleed, that would frighten most anyone. Biting your cheek, tongue tip, inner lip to bleeding gives you lots of spit/blood mix that all can read as blood if phobic, ignorant, or if fear and paranoia have been properly applied. I was also taught that while only part of self-defense to thoughtful attackers, leaving your own blood ensures possibly of DNA evidence. Not ideal, certainly, but better than nothing.

These ideas and more I used to great effect winning against the worst impulses of a horrendous offender at about 6. Used the horror trope of the overly mature child. I said I liked my teeth, my fingernails and his blood. I threatened exsanguination before biting him and then biting lips so he thought he bleeds and bleeds.he was terified

I finally started carrying pepper spray and here's why.

Honestly, I always assumed I was careful enough on my own, that I did not need to be paranoid and assume the worst happening to the point where I would need to have pepper spray on me, that was until a recent evening walk changed my perspective. The streets were quiet as usual, I was alone coming from my routine evening strolls.

I felt that gut-level unease, I felt like I was being followed, but when I looked behind me, I saw no one. It was not until a few minutes that I caught a glance of someone in a hood trying to hide behind a parked bus, that was when I knew I was not imagining things, so I ran,.as fast as I could, It was either I gave a pretty good distance or the person didn't give me a chase, I was too scared to know which it was. I got home, locked up and then I started to find videos on how to DIY a pepper spray, however, I didn't trust myself to pull it off, so I just went on Alibaba and ordered one that I picked up during lunch the next day.

I still look over my shoulder when I walk back home but this time, I have my hand in my bag ready to defend myself should the need arise.

I went to my first class and realized I’m more out of shape

So I finally summoned up the courage to try out my first true self-defense class last night. To be honest, I thought I was going in to become an action star instantly, but I literally walked out like a red tomato. It is very easy to understand how to throw a punch, that’s like the easy part, but the actual stamina to consistently throw punches for, that’s a whole different story.

The instructor was exceptional, very grounded and taught us to be aware of our surroundings using more than just flashy techniques. During our break, some of us were talking about home security and if self training is sufficient to protect a household, and then one gentleman said that he had been looking at various self defense supplies on Alibaba and how he intends to properly arm his house with all the up-to-date security features and gadgets, he mentioned it was because of an incident he had previously (which he refused to share by the way). Do you guys think it's better to focus more on the physical training, or is the gadget and home security side of things just as important? Or am I just overthinking it because I'm too tired to even move?

Should I buy my 7 yo boy a mace?

Context: we live in a not-the-best neighborhood, very walkable though, parks and what not nearby. My 7 yo boy is very active and wants to go on a bike everywhere, wants to be more independent etc.

I'm not as concerned about people being aggressive towards him as much as I am concerned about big dogs that irresponsible owners let loose very often. Sometimes these larger dogs sneak around our house, so even if I make the guy stay at home all the time there are higher than zero chances he can get attacked by a dog.

Is a mace a good idea? The guy is not very responsible, chances that he will use it on another kid or it is taken from him and used against him or on someone else and then he gets blamed are above 0. I thought it is still better than letting him out without any chance to defend.

I am going to buy a bunch of sprays and let him use one on me to give him an idea what it is (and give me an idea if he is ready for it)

Thoughts?

Self Defense Tips for Someone who’s hamstrung by Zero-Tolerance?

Hey!

This is going to sound weird but I could use some advice.

I work at a retirement home and we have a new resident who has been making me and some of the other residents/workers uneasy. You know the person you don’t want to sit next to on the subway? He’s that guy.

My bosses are aware of the situation, but they can’t do anything because while the new resident is a creep, he hasn’t done anything against the rules yet.

Making matters worse is that the home has a zero-tolerance policy. So if you get into a fight, you can’t even defend yourself (which is stupid but I don’t make the rules).

My job pays in room and board so I really can’t afford to lose my job. However, I don’t want to get badly injured in case he does decide to attack.

So what is something I can do to protect myself and others without getting into trouble? Scream “fire”? Barricade myself in a room? Stand tall and proud?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How to teach stranger danger to an adult?

My younger cousin (21F) grew up incredibly sheltered/boundary-less to the point where she trusts literally everyone with her life. I am so scared she's going to end up on the news as missing.

Just this weekend, she told me she pulled over on the highway for a truck of guys that was driving next to her trying to ask her number. I tried to share how horrifying that is, but she seemed to think it was funny and was happy they thought she was pretty. She responds to scam texts and has conversations with them if they tell her they're trying to make friends or something.

I'm so lost at what time do other than sharing after the fact why these situations are so dangerous. Are there self-defense classes that teach adults how to be safe around strangers? (she isn't neurodivergent other than ADHD, just incredibly sheltered)

My quick no BS checklist for "beginners". Feel free to add on

1 grappling art, 1 striking art, put them together in mma sparring until you can reliably beat untrained opponents bigger and more athletic.

Lift weights and start running umtil you are above average.

If american train with firearms, if uk or the like carry a good flashlight

Learn to not be a cunt when it matters. Dont hang around bars or shady places at shady times. Keep your ego in check.

Dont doubt yourself if something feels bad, leave. Enforce boundaries.

If home is a concern go about reinforcing and getting security features.

For family be present and learn how to spot and avoid predators to teach them.

SELF DEFENSE IN STR33T QUESTION

Had a question for you guys, I am a complete noob and haven't begun to do ANY form of martial arts, I wanted to do whats best for a real street fight/self defense and I figured I would go here and ask.

I want to train at an MMA gym but the ones near me only have a pure MMA class once a week and the other days are BJJ, there is another gym that specialized in Muay Thai and BJJ and I could go 4x a week, I also considered going to a pure boxing gym aswell but from what iv'e seen online, mma/muay thai + bjj seem to be better for a real street fight vs just knowing boxing, so my question is, if I wanted to be best in a street fight for seld defense what is best, pure boxing or Muay Thai + BJJ, again I'd love to join a pure MMA gym but there are none near me that have multiple classes per week, sorry for the noob question but I'd really like some advice, i'm getting kind of frustrated with all these options, thank you guys. Hey guys!hope y'all are doing great,I’m looking for errm practical,real-world advice and experiences on escaping encounters involving someone with a knife or other sharp object. Not asking about fighting or anything like that lol,but what actually helps people get away safely when avoidance fails and things turn tense fast. For those with training or real encounters, what mattered most in those moments?is it distance, barriers, running, verbal de-escalation, situational awareness, or something else?I’m especially interested in what not to do, common mistakes people make under stress, and what you wish you had known beforehand. I understand every situation is different all the time and that prevention is key; I’m just trying to learn realistic ways to survive and disengage.

So yeah I have the model of personal alarm from saber red. And I just went outside it's dark outside. Went outside and I tested it. I walked up half a mile up the street to a busy intersection. And I took it off pull the pin and dropped it on the ground. No one did anything. No one in the parking lot heard it and came over. I mean the cars driving by they weren't I don't know if they could hear it but they didn't stop. There was a lady up the block now I don't know I don't know if she saw me I don't know I mean she heard it but she didn't come to investigate at all. She just kept holding her sign that said she needed money or whatever and she also had a dog with her. Cuz I went up and I apologized I was like oh I'm sorry and my keychain alarm came undone. She could care less.

I walked up a block and a half and tried it again no one. Now granted both times it was for less than 30 seconds. I mean maybe around 10 seconds I don't know it seemed longer just because it's freaking annoying and there is this little bit of thought like oh what if someone comes over and makes a big deal about this.

Anyways I'm going to test this again within the next week maybe even tomorrow does anyone have any ideas? I would love some ideas on where I should go try this next.

Has anyone tested a personal alarm in everyday life?

Title pretty much says it has anyone ever tested one of those personal alarms like the grenade style that you pull the pin and it keeps beeping until you put the pin back in. I'm wondering if anyone has ever maybe went with a buddy and in a parking lot pulled it and then see if anyone came to the rescue? I mean my theory on those is pretty much always been people are going to ignore them. Because how often do you actually go and investigate or call someone if a car alarm is going off or really any other type of alarm? Outside of a fire alarm going off in a building that I am in I'm really not doing much. I mean yeah after a couple minutes or something I might go out and see what's going on but it isn't like I'm going to immediately run there or I'm even going to call the police.

I might have to test this myself. See if anyone actually even responds to it.

I will be a package delivery driver and I know that some households in the neighborhood have big aggressive dogs. Let's ignore my arms or legs and only focus on face/head/neck for this discussion. Do you think that wearing a solid motorcycle helmet with a strong strap that wraps around my chin tight will be perfect protection against 3 large aggressive dogs attacking me?

Any studies into effectiveness of different self defense techniques?

Recently had a disturbing experience at the park with my toddler that has made me want to invest in some form of self defense.

I have mainly been thinking about pepper spray, but I wanted to see if there have been any real studies done on how effective different forms of self defense are. Like how often is a person carrying pepper spray actually able to fend of an attacker. And how does that compare to someone relying on a personal alarm, or flashlight, or martial arts, etc.

I have tried looking around, but all I seem to be able to find are companies who sell products telling me how effective they are or personal anecdotes from redditors. I just want to make sure I am making a choice based on facts and not based on fear.

thought id ask on here for different opinions, outlooks , tips and general advice 🫶 i think the most important things are defence Hands up at cheek level,Chin tucked slightly down,Elbows in — protect ribs,Eyes forward, not at the floor but IDK HOW TO EXECUTE THAT or how I’ll do in the moment (im not looking for a fight I’m actually Being targeted and threatened) this is more of a safety thing and not looking like a PUSS

I know that I need to :

Stick with people, not alone

• Stay in staffed / public areas

• Keep physical distance

• Leave early if vibes are off

I yelled at him and he eventually got up. How can I defend myself sitting down, while he is sitting down too?

help me explain to people self defense

I had a situation where 2 people were trying to fight me. In a prior incident i struck one of them in self defense. Although i initiated the action i was under reasonable belief of imminent threat. I went to a lawyer to discuss this but evidently something stuck the lawyer so they started to ego fight me and macho me out. I was trying to discuss with them the legality of self defense but they kept saying that since i struck first then i was at fault and the other instances they harassed me were because of my actions so i am at fault. I kept trying to explain that although I struck first they were 2 centimeters away from my face for over a minute with their chest up. i can reasonably assume a confrontation will happen because there is no reason a person should stay like that towards another person unless they were trying to kiss them which in my case would be sexual assault. they kept trying to berate me. why does this happen? is this a case of some people will never understand?

Want to learn self-defense. Confused between Boxing and Krav Maga

Hey everyone, I’m thinking of learning self-defense seriously, mainly for real-life safety and confidence not for competition or showing off.

I’m confused between Boxing and Krav Maga.

From what I understand: Boxing seems great for striking, fitness, reflexes and staying calm under pressure.

Krav Maga is more street-oriented and focuses on real-world situations.

My goal isn’t to get into fights. It’s to be able to protect myself and get out of dangerous situations if needed. For people who’ve trained in either (or both): Which one is more practical for real-life self-defense? Is boxing alone enough? Does Krav Maga actually work in real situations, or does it depend a lot on the gym/instructor? Would love honest opinions and personal experiences.

I would have to learn it my own..

Some observations on learning self-defense

I posted this in response to a question by a small woman asking how to get better able to protect themselves and I was asked to create a separate post with this answer. ———-

Probably the most useful skill set to start with is how to notice problems early and avoid getting into situations. It does not always work but it is the best first answer.

The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker is a very useful book to help with this.

Jeff Cooper’s Principles of Personal Defense is short and has many useful insights. His perspective is very male and he is a strong proponent of being armed, kind of the opposite of de Becker in that way, but Cooper’s perspective is quite useful.

As for physical skills:

You have less size and, unless you are very fit, significantly less upper body strength than most of the aggressors you are likely to face, so you either need a weapon or a significant skill advantage if it gets physical.

The fastest effective thing you can learn for physical self defense is to use pepper spray.

There are some methods you can learn in a good self defense class which can surprise and hurt an opponent quickly and give you a chance to try to escape, but they depend on surprise and some luck.

Beyond that you are left with putting in effort to learn skills which take time to acquire enough proficiency. These skills can be with or without weapons.

Judo is easy to find most places because it is an Olympic sport and is generally well taught and inexpensive. Almost no one is teaching Judo to make money. It is often taught in universities which might allow the public to train there, recreational centers, etc. You may need to put in some effort to find what is available in your area.

Judo will teach you how to deal with someone bigger trying to use force against you. You will learn to fall safely. If you can use a throw in class against a person who has trained to resist with skill, it will be much easier to do against a person without skill.

If you throw a person in real life (not on a mat) and they don’t know how to fall safely, this will probably damage them more than any punch or kick you are likely to deliver in a fight. A strong person with weight behind it can throw a hard punch if they do it right, but it takes a good measure of skill, strength and timing to hit harder than a fall. :)

BJJ is good after you are already on the ground, but being on the ground with someone who is likely to weigh more and have more strength and aggression is not good. It is a good skill to have if you are already there, but skills which can be used while standing and that let you run away are much better than being stuck on the ground.

Boxing and kickboxing or Muay Thai are all good ways to learn striking and how to move. Learning elbow and knee strikes are especially helpful because they are effective and do less damage to you and they can be used even at very close range.

Punches are very good for range and hitting hard, but without gloves there is serious risk of hurting your hands when hitting the head or other places where bones are hard (like if they block with elbows or shoulders) and being effective with fists against targets below the neck is challenging with opponents who are bigger than you are.

Dear self defense fuds

sometimes you actually need to defend yourself. there will be times where your unable to tuck your Wang in between your legs and cowar off into the sunset. sometimes you will be cornered, they could be faster than you and so many other situations where running away isnt an option. your asics running shoes , pink pull pin alarm and new york id aren't gunna cut it. you need to arm yourself or at rhe very minimum have a lethal/less lethal combo. like using pepper spray first then using a knife or gun if it fails. I'm tired of seeing these people in the sub crap on others self defense setups just because they dont only have a pistol to use and are super proud of their ability to run away thinking its gunna save them everytime until they meet the version of Usain bolt that isnt into professional sports but rather YN activities

I know im Gunna lose karma . The proud cowards ain't gunna like this one and thats fine

I've had two experiences and they trouble me a little

I've had two experiences one was I walking and was really focused on my phone then when I put my phone down instantly a crazy dude appeared right to my face I panicked and I don't know why but I put my fist up, (but I was scared as hell, I was praying the crazy dude doesn't do anything) and luckily he walked away, there was someone on the other side of the road who shouted me (you should have punched him) I didn't say anything but I was scared shitless.

Second scenario I was walking with my Home girl and we were waiting at the bus stop I saw a crazy dude shouting from the other side of the road and he was crossing I instantly pulled her to the side and suddenly the crazy guy stood I placed myself in front of her but I was scared doing it we briefly had a stare off (like before I was praying that nothing happens) and again nothing happened. What am afraid of if something happened I would have frozen and not reacted or threw a punch

(before anyone says do a martial art.) I did Mma for three four years, but I was afraid of sparring I remember there was someone my instructor would make spar with and he knew I was afraid and he enjoyed it. Not to say but I remember one time where I did actually make him work for it I just got in and said F it. It was the only time I ever dominated in a spar but that was once.

Martial arts for a Small Teenager who's gotten beat up by bigger guys

I am currently a teenager who wants to look into martial arts for discipline and self-defence. In all honesty, before a year ago I was quite an asshole lol. I was full of myself and overconfident even though I am small and don’t look my age and I am a late bloomer (I still haven’t hit puberty).

I got a huge reality check when I got attacked and pretty much beaten up on a bus by random kids my age that I didn’t know who were looking for a fight. I didn’t defend myself because I was scared.

It’s been a year since then and I never want that to happen again. I want to become tougher so people stop thinking of me as a weakling and so I can take on people bigger than me.

I’ve researched and thought maybe I should try Lethwei since it’s my ethnicity’s national sport, but I’m open to suggestions.

I would have to pay for it myself, I only make $88 a week, so finding a teacher would cost a bit. It would be good if it was easy to learn on YouTube

Dumb question I'm sure but here we go haha.. 20k lumen flashlight? Would it actually do anything or would someone 20ft away from you just not be phased and continue their trip toward you? I was gonna do 20k lumen for my car and pepper spray on my person while I'm out for my runs.

I sometimes park at the beach and you never know whats up so figured at night could use the flashlight for any weirdos doing weird things / coming my way. Wouldn't be used like a gun of course just like a warning light and if they continue then I'm out of there haha.

Best Self Defense Martial Arts Arts Between Kickboxing and MMA

I really want to start getting into fighting as a mid-20s male. I know this probably gets asked a lot and sounds naive but I want to maximize survival, strength, and fitness. Maybe even have a little fun. Which self defense martial is the best?

I’m narrowing between Kickboxing/Muay Thai and or MMA (Jiu Jitsu) primarily. I have hear of grappling and Krav Maga but I more interested in the former. I’m open to whatever yields the best fighting results though.

I know I’m really naive go easy on me, I used to do boxing for one year in high school and took a boxing course one year in College, I really want up my strength and self defense this year. Thanks in advance!

Is it chicken to use pepper spray?

Yesterday I was at the skate park when a young child on a scooter went right in front of me and there was no avoiding contact. The parent got extremely mad, even though I tried helping their child up. The dad threw his hat on the floor, threw his jacket on the floor, bald his fist up and came straight for me yelling “I’m gonna knock your teeth out.” He out weighed me by a good 80 pounds of muscle and was a very big dude. I’m 5 foot seven135 . In my pocket I had knife and a can of pepper spray. I chose to use the pepper spray and it was a direct shot. However, a little bit of the mist hit me in the eyes as well as I did not get out of the way fast enough. The direct shot did not incapacitate the man immediately, and I had to punch my way through it. After 10 seconds he was done from the pepper spray. My question is, is it chicken to use pepper spray like that? I in no way wanted to fight anybody… the guy said he was gonna knock my teeth out. I didn’t know what to do. So I picked the less lethal option. What do you guys think?

What makes people suddenly become interested in personal safety equip

I never thought much about personal safety beyond basic awareness until my neighborhood experienced a string of break ins last month. Nothing violent, just property crimes that left everyone feeling uneasy. Suddenly conversations at the coffee shop shifted to security systems, neighborhood watches, and various protection options people were considering.

My neighbor mentioned getting a pepper ball gun as a non lethal deterrent that felt more serious than traditional pepper spray but less extreme than firearms. The logic made sense but it also felt like crossing some threshold into a more defensive mindset. Once you start buying safety equipment, where does it end. Do you become more secure or just more paranoid.

I looked into options out of curiosity and found a surprising range of products designed for home defense without lethal force. Everything from basic models to professional grade equipment, with prices varying based on features and range. Even found wholesale suppliers on Alibaba that cater to this market, which made me realize how common these concerns are globally. My question is whether this kind of preparation actually makes you safer or just feeds anxiety. At what point does reasonable caution become excessive fear. How do you evaluate real risk versus perceived threat. And once you start down the path of defensive equipment, does it change how you see your environment and neighbors. Is feeling safer worth potentially becoming more suspicious.
