Tickling in a street fight

Has anyone tried to wrestle someone in a street fight and thought about tickling the opponent?

I’m sure this would work right? Maybe not on everyone but I feel like it could be a way to defend yourself and then give an opening. For example a rear naked choke or someone trying to ground and pound you

Thoughts?

When is kicking someone in the nuts most likely to work?

I’m asking this because I heard that it sometimes doesn’t work and I don’t wanna be in a position where I try this on someone only for it to not work.

Need advice regarding my neighbor

There’s a fat redneck dude that lives in my neighborhood who abuses his dog and keeps it locked up outside. Dog is skin and bones. He’s known around here as being an asshole to everyone. Hearing him scream at his gf, possibly wife, is a regular occurrence. I’m legit like 10 houses away and I can hear that shit. Cops have been called there many times.

One day while driving past his place I saw him punch this dog hard af in the side. The dog went down for a few seconds and then struggled to get up. Not sure what happened after that as I kept driving. But I did not feel right about it at all. I did something very stupid and the next day, when it seemed no one was home, I took the dog and gave it to my friend who works with an animal shelter. I practically had to carry the dog because it could barely walk.

All good right? No. This guy, who used to mostly pay me no mind, gave me a death stare last time I drove by and made some weird gesture. Now I’m scared he knows it was me that took the dog and I’m worried he’s going to try to kick my ass soon. He’s probably like 6’3” 300lbs (all fat) and I’m only 5’9” 170lbs. Assuming he does know it was me and approaches me one day as I’m getting home, what’s my best chance of survival? I’m certain I could just run away and he would have no chance of catching me, but that doesn’t do much good when he knows where I live.

Is 3-6 months of training worth it for self-defense?

Hey everyone. Looking for honest opinions on whether short-term training makes sense in my situation.

Background:

  • Trained Wing Chun in college for a few years
  • Did private BJJ lessons for 9 months (flow rolls, technique work, no hard sparring)
    • I took breaks when I was injured
  • Currently just weightlifting for health

Injury history:

  • Grade 1 knee tear from BJJ (healed now)
  • Nagging wrist pain when I was training
  • Sports physiatrist cleared me to return to BJJ "privately and up to a point"

What I'm considering:

  • 3-6 months of private lessons (BJJ + maybe kickboxing)
  • Purely for self-defense - no interest in competing or long-term training
  • Would quit after learning basics

My main priority is staying healthy and injury-free. I have a girlfriend now and thought about being able to protect her, but I'm wondering if short-term training is even worth it given my injury history and the fact I plan to quit anyway.

Would a few months give me anything useful, or am I just risking re-injury for minimal benefit? I'm also considering training longer (however long is needed) or just taking a weekend self-defense seminar instead - would that be more practical given my situation?

I want someone to give me a realistic answer on how long I'd have to train, whether I'd have to do hard sparring or would just technique work be enough and whether it's worth it if my #1 priority is to stay healthy and not get injured preparing for some hypothetical scenario.

For context, I'm from EU so carrying a gun is not an option for me.

Sunday night I was almost mugged by a group of five teenagers in NYC

Sunday night around 8 PM, I was walking on 14th street towards the west side highway when a group of five kids approaching me head on down the block (probably between the ages of 12 to 17), cut me off. All I heard was “form a circle!” and the biggest one of the group stepped in front of me. They surrounded me with their arms extended outwards, to block my escape, right next to the stairwell entrance to the highline and asked if I had any money. They were so casual, didn't pull a knife or a gun, and were almost laughing while they asked me, that it took me a second to realize what was going on.

I said no but they asked again, I said no and tried to move past them. The youngest kid looked me dead in the eye and said, “We aren’t asking you.”

I recognize in hindsight this sounds obvious, but it all happened so quickly (10 to 15 seconds maybe) that I only snapped out of it and realized that I had to leave asap as soon as he said those words. I turned and ducked as fast as I could out of the circle and ran down the block towards little island. They chased me for a second but there were so many people towards the end of the block, and it wasn't dark that they just gave up.

I’m mostly posting my story to share it with others as well as get some advice as to how to handle a situation like that next time. People on the R/NYC sub were very helpful - but sadly this post was taken down for being “unverifiable crime”.

I’ve lived in the city for 11 years so this isn’t my first rodeo being alert for people who can cause trouble. Looking back, it felt like it was a momentary lapse of judgement, and considering the fact that it was a fairly nice area that I visited dozens of times over the years, it was fairly early in the day and not dark, and there were plenty of people. It was not something that I was expecting that could ever happen in a place like that.

Thank you

Are there any foam sprays ?

Ok so prepper spray/oc spray but a sticky solidifying foam , like some you make sure the bad guy can't see

Does anything like this exist already? Honestly would a foaming pepper spray that doesn't solidifying work ? Cause instantly covers the eyes and then if wiped off it still does the normal pepper spray stuff of swelling the eyes shut

Avoiding danger/scams/human trafficking while visiting Thailand

Precautionary steps to handling being in a live situation, what measures can someone take to avoid being trafficked in any given situation.

I'm asking this as I, a relatively fit guy is planning a trip to thailand, the phillipines and indonesia with my cousin (female)... we'll be in different cities at points in the trip and although the two of us are relatively responsible, we dont plan on being sober throughout...

I'm pretty sure worrying about trafficking in economies that rely on tourism is futile but ig better safe than sorry... oh and were also broke and so not gonna be able to afford reputable hotels and likely stay in less safe areas.

Menthol based "oc"

I live in a country that treats self defence sometimes as bad as being the attacker. Real oc needs a licence and can be seen as over use of force even if you have license, really tight guncontrol, no tasers, no telescopic batons ect, so pretty shitty situation.

Only license free "oc" is menthol spray so has any one of you used one or know anything about its effectiveness? I got coersed to be a driver unwillingly and now im trying to find any way to defend myself.

Defending someone else from knife attack

If someone with a lot of training and experience gets between an attacker with a knife and a person they've injured who's now crouched in a corner, what's next?

For myself, I know, run away, comply if safe, and create space. If I got between someone with a knife and a person they were targeting, I'd be done for. But what would be going through the mind of someone who actually knew what they were doing? What are the best options for those next few seconds?

Smell based self defence (surströmming)

I've been thinking about using surströmming juices in a spray bottle for some key reasons

1) nothing prohibits it, its a literal food product

2) if someone were to be soaked with it, they would most likely start retching if not even vomiting, and try to get their clothes off

3) in contrast to pepper spray, it doesn't cause pain, which is often a reason perpetrators become even more enraged, disgust is much more disorienting when you want to cause harm, meanwhile pain/retaliation is expected and it fuels the adrenaline even more

Best non-gun carry for women

Hello 👋

Currently my girlfriend is having an issue (we’re ldr currently for context)

Someone she knew from 2yrs ago is trying to find her and had assaulted her prior. He’s been asking around their old friends to see where she is thankfully none of them have provided where she lives but the fear is still there. Restraining order is doing nothing as he simply doesnt care and is too mentally ill i’d assume to even give a shit seeing how out of prison he is looking.

She is 5’4 and 110lbs he is over 6ft so a notable size difference would anyone here recommend a specific tazer? Pepper spray brand or anything that would definitely kick someone on their to flee.

Best Kicks for Self Defense?

Now, I do not get my leg kicks very high. I guess a solid kick to the head would be technically speaking the best kick.

But I personally would like to know more about kicks to the legs. Now, watching MMA the kick the calve seems to be quit famous but it seems to be better if you kick the upper leg for more damage and because it is saver

I think kicks to the knee could be dangerous. There is the Oblique kick in MMA done often by Jon Jones but I could imagine a direct hit to the knee maybe a bit from the side could kick the opponents knee out.

Is it better to do a front kick to the leg/knee or a kick from the side?

What should I do if I’m stuck in a taxi?

As a woman who regularly takes taxis or Ubers, I’ve recently been wondering what would I do if the taxi driver just locked the doors and windows and didn’t let me leave, while yes I could break a window and possibly jump out, surely the impact from jumping out would severely injure me? Or in cars such as the Toyota CHR there is a small back window, where a person would not be able to fit through. What should I do in that situation?

Why don't more basic self defense techniques utilize elbows?

They're easier to put weight into with a strike, and easier to recover from. Your also a lot less likely to damage your elbow than your fist from striking.

Pepper spray and wolves – MC values

Hi! There are more and more stories about wolves getting more common here in Central Europe, and since I spend quite a lot of time walking my dog in the forest, I would like to buy pepper spray just in case. I have done some research and I think I want a cone-shaped mist type spray, but I keep finding contradictory information about MC concentrations.

Some websites claim that a pepper spray to use against humans would have 0.3–1.3% MC, one against aggressive dogs should be in the upper part of the same region (0.7-1.3% MC), and since wolves are "tougher", one against them should have 1.3-2% MC.

But then other websites claim that pepper spray against humans should actually be more powerful (1.3-2% MC), and one against dogs and wolves alike should be weaker (around 0.2% MC), because due to their acute sense of smell they are more susceptible to it, plus a stronger pepper spray could permanently damage their senses of smell and sight.

I have no idea which version to trust. Could someone better informed explain this to me? Ideally with some trusted sources I can look at?

As to my use case – like I said, the main idea would be to have it as protection from wolves. If possible, it would be great if the same spray could also be used effectively against aggressive humans and/or dogs. I would not want to harm anyone permanently, though, so if such a "general purpose" spray is not a thing, I'm all right with that. I also don't expect to be meeting bears.

I'll be grateful for any suggestions and explanations.

torch as a precaution for walking home at night?

hi everyone, i think this post follows the sub rules but let me know if it doesn't, and i can edit it.

i work half an hour away by public transport from where i live. for the most part it's a pretty safe route to travel during the day and at night, but tonight i was followed/harangued by a guy i've never met before. he was asking questions about where i lived, who my family and friends are, and whether i was transgender or not (i am, but i didn't tell him that), and he tried to offer me some food. this guy was in his mid-late twenties, relatively tall and i'm 19 and not very physically imposing due to a chronic illness. naturally i was a bit concerned and weirded out, and i felt quite cornered at the time. to combat this in the future, do you think it would be worth considering carrying around a large metal torch

? i already have one (it's about 30cm long, steel with a replaceable bulb and is pretty durable) hence why i am asking.

i live in australia so pepper spray, tasers, knives and guns are out of the question. thanks!!

Discreet but powerful (If needed) tool?

Hi there, new to this sub. I can already see that this place is not only needed by some, but also respectful, which I appreciate! I just wanted to mention that before I ask my question.

My wife (as well as I, but that's not the point of the post) has a full-time job in the downtown district of the capital city of our large crime state. She does not have on-site parking, and from time to time feels uncomfortable.

The main reason for my post is that during the pandemic, my wife created a local program where she would pick up and drop off donated dog food to those struggling/in need. She notified our local Humane Society, or animal shelter, to let her know if anyone called to let her know who and where to go, she would be happy to do so.

A few times now, she has either called or texted me about her fear of the area or fear of the "client". which, obviously, makes her and me uneasy. She is not comfortable with a pew-pew, and she used to travel with something called a "dog style knuck"...(just google it). However, that tool broke years ago. Related to that, we both don't hope that closeness would happen anyway. But here we are.

I won't go into specifics, and thankfully, nothing did happen, But a very...strange person contacted her to have her drop off food. My wife reasonably got sketched out to the point of giving the entire cause up, which we both would hate to do. But she persisted, and like I said, everything went well.

For her to feel more confident/ COMFORTABLE, any suggestions?

TLDR: My wife essentially door-dashes donated pet food to strangers. She isn't comfortable with pews. Recs?

Side note - Just to clear out any misconceptions, I have gone with her on these trips on several occasions and also requested the address she visits before she visits each time.

The will to act, within a street fight setting?

Alright so, I would think I have an issue with this specifically maybe in a self defence setting, that said idk why.

Let me try to explain, let's say a lad on the street steals your stuff, and sure you get a fight or flight response. But for me hmm, some reason I'm like "it's not worth chasing him down because I'd rather not fight unless he tryst physical harm. But ALSO I think my issue is that of intimidation be ot physical looks of X person or people?

Sure you spar with people who are bigger than you in my case .

But somehow it's dif irl.. How to fix these issues in a street situation? or what's the best course of action? Let's say worse case scenario, he doesn't try to steal stuff but actionally threatens life or tries to beat you up but he has intimidation aura?

tools or weapons that can't be turned against you?

Hello people. I am a small framed female with a leg injury that makes it hard for me to walk long distances so i was thinking running away from danger would be very difficult. I know that learning martial arts and self defence is pretty much useless if your opponent - which means 99.9% of guys for me - are twice your size. So i was wondering if you know of a good tool or some kind of weapon to not only shock the attacker but hopefully buy a looot of time. As i was searching, i saw the regular teaser guns, small knives, flashlight or even pepperspray but i always wonder, even if i land a hit successfully what's stopping the guy to just take it from my hand and game over...? Obviously outside a real gun, no small knife will completely neutralize the danger unless i cut straight thru his throat but then i just committed murder... which is not ideal. I mean if you really think about it unless you are built or train like a gazelle, a fit male can easily run you down even if you buy some time and make distance... Have you ever thought about this? Weapons be turned against you? Is there a thing that is good for this problem? I'm sorry if it's a bit confusing, this is my second language.

Self defense recommendations for my tense living situation.

My MiL's husband had a manic break and threatened my family. He's had episodes like this before and has put a gun to someone's head. That someone is now dead, not because of him, but I can't use her to testify against him or anything like that. I mentioning it to show how far he'll go. We ARE leaving but as a poor we can't leave immediately. We are trying to get my MiL to leave with us. She has Parkinson's and she'll just become a victim if we leave her behind. He does own guns but my SiL, who is a police officer, is supposed to come and retrieve them. I know my best solution would probably be to get a gun myself but one, I probably can't afford one right now and two, I don't think I can get one soon enough for it to be relevant. I need to be able to protect my family if something happens, what do I get?

I lack assertiveness

My therapist explained it this way. There are 3 zones. 1. Passive 2. Assertive 3. Aggression.

I’m a very chill person and lack assertiveness. Instead of being able to weave in and out of the 2nd zone I sit in the passive zone until I explode directly into aggression. There are situations that call for assertiveness without dipping into pure aggression, especially when it comes to self defense.

Does anyone have any pointers on how I can practice this? It may save my life some day if I learn how to be assertive when I need to be instead of going straight into aggression or staying passive. I work in customer service and I’ve been trying to implement this when I can.
