I found this post.
Indeed what he describes is precisely why I never reveal to anyone that not only do I box and practise martial arts but that I had lots of experience growing up in a ghetto and participating in gang violence. One of the big problems adjusting to middle class background was the tendency how-even if I'm going out with my gang of muscular hardened friends-that for some reason we face even more jerks who want to fight us because they're bored and thinking beating on people who "look tough" is a game.
Oh before I go on, this explains my background.
Now the main reason I bring this up is..... Back in the ghetto when I was getting jumped before joining my gang, they at least did it because they got real benefits. Stealing my pocket money, distracting me while my bike was being commandeered, at least they weren't doing it for random crap and giggles but for real tangible items. Hell I was even the one who turned what was a simple robbery into a brutal bloodbath because I provoked the mugger who never had intention giving me a bloody nurse but merely intended to hurt me enough to take my wallet.
I mean even when I was openly practising boxing at first as the second link states, the reason I was attacked had nothing to do with training outdoors and more to do with the fact I still had middle class possessions as we were still moving transitioning from middle class to poverty life. In fact there was even a brief period our whole family literally lost everything except our punching bag and all I could do was box. Yet strangely despite doing it in public including in front of people who already did crimes against me and future bullies, none of them ever targeted me because I was acting like a tough guy and they were looking for a challenge!
Where as once I started going back to middle class lifestyle and my crew I hanged with was also transitioning with me, I noticed how so many middle class people fight for stupid reason but some of us were targeted simply because some jerk wanted to look for a challenge and thought since me or anyone else in my crew looked muscular (with some of us even doing shadowboxing in public). I had your stereotypical TV jock from the middle class attack me just because I was lifting weights and they wanted to put me down (literally they said this) because "wannabes" like me are a bunch of pansies and should know their place. I wasn't trying to provoke anyone, I was just hanging with my friends. Likewise there was frequently some guy who practised martial arts who wanted to test his skills trying to provoke my friends who practised boxing out at the pack (even bragging about how us showoffs should b humbled).
I'll just leave it here because still thinking about it simply brings me bad memories of the biggest stupidies I ever seen FACEPALM. I have for worse stories to tell but they're so stupid I cannot bring myself to type it.
But to the main point, how come there's so much dick measuring in the martial arts and fighting community. Not just that but the middle class in general (as some of us were targeted by non-fighters who wanted to show off to their girl even if they're normally just nerds who play Dungeons and Dragons)? I mean some of these guys are skate punks or some other hobby completely unrelated to fighting?!
Its not just me and my crew, I cannot tell you how many times I seen people practising katas in the park get taunted by some random badboy wannabe into throwing a punch and even bodybuilders simply running get assaulted by some obese guy who was trying to show off to his friends he brought with him. I don't even want to put more details because I'm facepalming right now!
I mean violence in the ghetto may have been FUCKING BRUTAL but at least people there fought for real tangibles such as cash, your skateboard, in some cases even the hotdog you just bought (as many ghetto people struggle to even get three daily meals)! Even if you're someone showing off your muscles or bragging about your fighting skills, you're generally not on someone's list as they're too busy looking for people with property they can use or sell.
Of all places, middle class people have the least justification to fight yet I seen here more than anywhere else the biggest amount of violence breakout for extremely silly reason as wanting to humble someone because he's more muscular than you! In the ghettos believe it or not people are quite hesitant to use violence especially over something so ridiculous. The only reason I was specifically chosen to attack was because ghetto people wanted that gameboy I own or never owned a skateboard and other real solid items you can hold in your hand.
In the middle class I notice just saying something as mundane as you exercise daily by hitting a bag or you practise boxercise is enough to bring a host of challengers. Even just having the right physique can inspire someone to start a feud with you.
What is the psychology behind this?
Now the next question I have is, how do I de-escalate encounters with "tough guys" looking for a random challenge to pounce on? As I said, I already avoid mentioning my past ghetto experience, my practising on the bag and years boxing, and recent entry into "traditional martial arts" because I fear encountering a trouble maker seeking a punching bag that will actually retaliate. I've been avoiding exercising in the backyard and even learned to dress in clothes that hide my muscles just to avoid being the center of attention from these guys. I'm not lying when I state for the last decade 8 years since I left the ghettos that I've been wearing long sleeves even in hot weather to avoid exposing my biceps!
I'd like to go on to be able to just wear a plane t-shirt and join my friends in public workout sessions again at the park so I'm curious if there's a method of de-escalating and even avoiding these guys without having to hide the fact I practise boxing or am bulky and swole as Arnold Schwarzenegger? Because I'm getting a bit exhausted with hiding myself. I mean just last week another of these guys, this time wearing a UFC shirt, tried to start crap with one of my buddies at a bar and even threw beer on him to provoke him into hitting back. Luckily the bouncer saw it and intervened. The UFC idiot even tried to redirect his hunger for a fight instead on the bouncer, hitting him, and the bouncer called for friends and they dragged him and threw him out.
I don't wish to encounter meatheads like this anymore!
