Protecting Property

I don't have a specific link, but I'm sure we've all seen those videos of porch pirates stealing a box that explodes with some colored paint or powder. They look rather convincing, some were around before AI was common. I wonder if the pirate victim would get sued for somehow injuring the porch pirate, coloring them or staining their car.

An ex-pro fighter killed after assaulting people

Hey, today on telegram i saw a video that was not very pleasant, an ex fighter (likely some sort of mentally ill person) was caught on video assaulting seemingly random people (sucker punches) later on the video cuts to him being shot in the back of the head by a young man. Would that young man be charged with murder?

Realistically what are my options?

Ok so for context I’m 17 years old, 6 feet tall, and 140 pounds, so I’m tall and skinny. There’s this guy, we’ll call him M, who’s also 17, he’s 6’4, and 215 pounds. M has made it very obvious that he doesn’t like me and has threatened to beat me up multiple times. On Friday my friend warned me that they heard him saying he was gonna wait for me by my car after school and beat the shit out of me, so I had one of my bigger more athletic friends drive me with his car over to mine, and I saw that he was waiting nearby. Now he wasn’t like right next to my car so I just got out real quick then hopped into mine and locked the doors, and I thought he’d left, but it turned out that he looped around the entire parking lot just to drive in front of me as I was about to leave to mouth shit at me and flick me off. I’m very grateful nothing happened but he totally was waiting there, and I’m scared of what would’ve happened if I wasn’t warned. I’ve already got pepper spray but idk what else I can do about this

I witnessed a pitbull attack and I need advice

I witnessed a pitbull attack a lady in a dog park. This incident really scared me as I have a lab myself and we often hike where unleashed shepherds and pitbulls (untrained with no off leash control) are a common hazard. I am a 5'2 woman (50kg) and while my dog is completely leash trained (no lunging, and doesn't bark/attack even when other dogs bark at him) I am concerned for my safety. I have heard of the choking method to break up a dog fight- linked below-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE8IjSRouuU&t=787s

I need advice, will this be enough for me to defend myself or will I need tools? if tools what tools would you suggest? I am looking into getting into some kind of self defense coaching but I fear my small size means that most martial arts would not be beneficial. (I am new to this so please forgive me if this sounds stupid)

(I am fairly athletic and have high endurance (cardio) but I am not much arm strength)

Family member sucker punched me 4 times

Family member I live with (father) sucker punched me 4 times in my head while I had my back turned to him during an argument where I told him to keep his hands to himself and broke my orbital bone. Charged at me while my back was turned and my mother was in between us (I told her to please step away) ended up being sucker punched full force with my back and head facing my father, I never fell, I just retreated out the front door as he was still throwing punches at my head. Entire right side of my face was immediately black and blue bleeding etc and I cannot see out of my right eye. I’m diabetic so I already have incredibly blurry vision. Just curious, as someone who has a CCW, would I have been justified to defend myself ? He has been abusing me since I was a child hitting me.. He has always known I will never hit him back as he will call the cops as he always threatens after he hits me.. I also have diabetes, epilepsy, I’m a disabled veteran due to major spinal injury and he has 50 pounds and 7 inches on me. I pay rent here as well if that matters. I am 30 years old and he is 57. Thanks in advance.

Other than situational awareness/prevention what is the best defense?

There's a lot of hype about martial arts and stuff like that, but I find it hard to separate the overhyped or bullshit stuff from the legit stuff. I wonder what the best all-round self-defensething is to train in, to learn how to take a blow without reeling and needing precious seconds to recover, or Alternatively learn how to avoid getting hit, preferably both. I don't want to destroy people, I want to be able to GTFO ASAP in a situation against one or multiple determined attackers even when exhausted or something. And before you ask, yes I'm taking up running.

I taught a monster Aikido techniques and unleashed him against a bjj black belt.

Video here 👇

https://youtu.be/PEISCGYnU_8?si=hHWzNBXP4227ygYz

How do you find these techniques translate to grappling?

I have spent years training Aikido Judo and Bjj, and have not only found a universe benefit, but I have built my whole style around it

Do you have anyone in the dojo that use these unconventional techniques for effective grappling.

I get a lot of messages of other practitioners that do

How do you feel this falls into the self defence topic?

Walking at night feels different now.

I’ve been thinking a lot about self defense. Not because anything happened but because walking home after work at night sometimes feels… tense. I started looking up tips online to have idea of what to do incase of something happens and small tools on Alibaba like pepper spray or anything to be more prepared and I guess I never really considered how much confidence plays into safety since Im a girl. I’m curious like do other people take safety lightly until something actually happens? Some people are like this just like my brother experienced before, he was walking alone at night and someone followed him and yk they threaten my big bro to give all his belongs, phone and cash and now hes being cautions everytime he walks alone. I feel like being alert isn’t paranoia but awareness. Even knowing a few basic techniques or carrying a small device changes how you feel while walking alone. Has anyone else felt that shift where small precautions make daily routines less stressful? Am I being paranoid or anything. I just wanna be prepared yk yk. It is that strange how planning for something unlikely can give peace of mind in very real situations.

A guy tried to start a fight because he thought I was staring at him

Was on the train and waiting for my girlfriend to jump on at her local station, she jumps on but obviously we have no idea which carriage she's on so I'm looking down both ends of the train trying to find her. I keep getting weird looks from a guy who's laughing and looking at me, not in a happy way but more like he's in disbelief I even dared to look in his direction. I start walking down the train away from him towards my girlfriend, ignore the guy because he's looking a bit off.

As I'm walking I get tapped on the back and he starts saying "You got something to say to me? You keep staring, watch yourself" and at the same time basically motions to something on his waist (assuming it's a knife since it's London). I just give him a confused expression as I look him up and down and ignore him to keep walking towards my girl. As I walk away he says "Don't walk away from me" and I just keep ignoring him because I know you're not really supposed to engage with idiots like this. I'm assuming he just has low self esteem and tries to act tough to make himself feel better but it was such an odd experience.

Did I handle myself alright? I can handle myself in a fight but obviously against a knife the odds aren't in my favour clearly. I disengaged and ignored him because I didn't want to cause a fight in front of my girl and potentially endanger her or others because so many weirdos carry knives around London thinking they're gangsters.

What would you do ?

Me and some friends went out everything was fine and then at the end of the night they made some jokes at my expense and I cussed them out for it. They then texted our group chat talking more shit and one of them said something about fighting which I told her she let people do things to her all the time and didn’t fight. I asked her why would I fight her? But that statement is making me feel like a pussy. They said a lot of mocking things talking about my trauma. The night of I was kinda tipsy and didn’t read everything but now I’m feeling like I should’ve fought them it was her and her girlfriend ganging up on me in the texts calling me scary and now it’s messing with my mental. But I already blocked them that night.

Physical confrontation with a homeless man

The other night I (25F) got into a physical confrontation with a homeless man while walking to dinner with my girlfriend. I’m wondering if I responded appropriately? Basically we were walking down the sidewalk of an empty street when this man- clearly drunk or high out of his mind locked eyes with me and walked up on me somewhat aggressively. When I felt that he got too close to us (within arms reach) I put out my hand and shoved him in the chest. He stumbled back, but was still standing in front of me so I shoved him again at which point he stumbled into a street sign and started to walk in another direction. Should I have been more aggressive right off the bat? Or was this an appropriate reaction? I have pretty extensive experience in self defense and kickboxing but I’ve never had to put it to use in real life

Feeling endangered as a night watchman, what to buy ?

Hello, i'm a french (so sorry for my trouble writing) night watchman working at a place where we give a place to stay to homeless people.

Since now, i worked at one of our places where i worked in an office disconnected from the "living areas" , and this office actually had 2 entrance so I wasn't feeling in danger there because i though that if someone wanted to cause me arm i could just run to the other entrance .

Now i'm working in a house and i only have a small office that is in the house, so basically if someone want to cause me arm, i'm just completely stuck.

And right now the peoples that are sheltered here are causing more and more trouble, it was just little disrespect behavior since tonight, and basically one dude threatened me.

Now i'm feeling a bit scared, so i wanted to know if you think buying something like a pepper spray could be a good idea, i just want something that would allow me to escape if somehow someone come with a knife or something.

i dont plan on doing self defense sport in any way.

Preparing for a cross-country road trip. What would you bring?

I will be traveling as a solo woman, starting in a couple weeks, towing my travel trailer around the US. I’m aware that there are a number of risks in this trip, and I’d like to be as prepared as I can. So far I have bear spray, mace “gun”, and an assortment of knifes. I’ll be getting a taser as well. I’ll also have a ring camera outside the trailer door. I’m not familiar handling a firearm and feel it would be more dangerous currently having one in my possession and possibly using it. I’ll be sharing my location with a couple family/friends and checking in. I own an Apple Watch that has the emergency button in the side…

Anything else you can think to add or prepare with?

Do you teach/learn takedown defence?

A lot of attacks will end up on the ground. Once running away is not an option anymore, do you teach people or learn how to do breakfalls so you dont get hurt while going down? Do you teach how to separate and get back to your feet? Do you cover how to prevent being taken down in the first place?

I couldn't protect someone

2 years ago at christmas I was with my godson's family on the bus and I was sitting next to the mother. She asked a guy behind is if he could be more quiet because the baby is sleeping and the guy started to yell back and harrassing her by words. I totally freezed and couldn't say a word. after a bit of time the father of the kid started to talk back who was sitting a few seats away. They started to yell with eachother and after a few minutes the guy hold back himself so there wasn't an actual fight.

when I was teen I got beat up a few times and later I was learning krav maga and thai box. I don't know how I could find in a real scenario, I want to think if he would have hit the father or the mother I would have been able to get in and fight back, but the verbal attack I couldn't do anything. I feel ashamed of freezing and it was 2 years ago and it's still with me. That time I was in a difficult part of my life and I was tired physically and mentally and I want to think also that was the reason, but I don't know. Now I am in a good period of life where I don't stress much, I started to do dancing where I have to lead and I am building my masculinity, but I don't know if it would happen again, then I would act differently.

What do you think, what should I do to improve my reactions in these situations and how should I get over what happened 2 years ago?

[HELP] I want to learn self-defense but I can’t find anything.

I want to learn self-defense but I can’t find a discipline that fits what I’m looking for

Hey everyone, I’m a bit lost and could use some guidance.

In my city (I live in Spain) I’ve been looking for grappling disciplines, and the main thing I find is Jiu Jitsu. The problem is that BJJ is great, but it has a million techniques, progress is super slow, and I don’t see myself learning 200 different submissions just to be competent.

I also looked for Olympic wrestling (like what Cormier or young Khabib trained), but here it simply doesn’t exist.

I checked out sambo, which is available, but sambo is very focused on grips and takedowns, and it doesn’t really prepare you well for striking on the feet. And I want something that also works against people who are going to throw punches at me.

For context, I’ve practiced kickboxing for a short time, and it’s useful — but the problem is: what if someone good on the ground grabs me and takes me down? I’d get dominated easily. So I feel like I need something more complete than just striking.

What I’m looking for is very specific:

Basic takedowns to put the opponent on the ground.

Top control to dominate them and be able to strike if needed.

A simple, effective choke (like a rear naked choke or something similar).

4–5 useful boxing combos and 2–3 basic kicks, nothing overly technical.

In short: I want the most important things from several disciplines without having to learn 1000 useless techniques. Just the fundamentals to defend myself well in a street situation.

Is there any discipline or approach that fits this? Or should I mix two or three styles but focus only on the basics? If anyone has gone through something similar or has experience, I’d really appreciate some advice.

My goal is to practice these fundamental and basic moves a million times and become a pro at them. I don't want to spend my time learning useless techniques and moved that won't help me on the streets

Thanks in advance

Did I act cowardly in this street confrontation?

I was driving with my younger brother when a car cut me off. I yelled, and the guy followed us and told me to pull over. Three guys were in his car. One of them came to my door, opened it, grabbed my shirt — I kicked him away, then got out of the car. He kept yelling and tried going toward my brother, so I shoved him back. His friends pulled him away, and I didn’t escalate because my brother was with me and they were three.

Now I keep replaying it in my head wondering if I acted cowardly or if I handled it the right way. Did I look weak, or was this normal considering the situation?

How to overcome freezing reaction

Hi I have a question concerning the reactions to danger and I hoped someone on here could help me hopefully. I hope it is okay to post here.

So I have this problem that I react to danger with freezing/fawning, this has been a real problem in the past, it has made me endure situations where I might have had a real fighting chance if I had gotten out of my stupor. I am to some extend trained in self defense as I am a brown belt in karate, even though I am well aware that others are more practical than karate. Still it could have helped me in the situations, I just never even thought about fighting in these situations. To me the main problem is mental. As soon as I am in real danger I freeze, I fawn, for a lack of better words, I submit.

Does anyone have experience/tricks to overcome this? Thank you in advance!!!!!

What body is the best to aim for to look like you can protect yourslf

The title is too short to explain it well. What body build (as in toning, muscular, bodyfat, strong shoulders) that can be achieved without too much time is good for having a "I can defend myself, don't mess with me" look?

I'm 5'11, male, 35 and about 95kgs. Some muscle but probably a little too much body fat too. Should I aim to be as big and heavy as possible (I find my metabolism slowing down and can put on bodyfat much easier now)? Or should I lose bodyfat even though I won't be as big? Should I gain muscle all over or focus hard on arms and shoulders (that's the muscles people take most notice of right)?

Protection against attacking dogs?

Hi all, I just moved to a neighborhood in a new city that seems more dangerous from a canine perspective than I’m used to. As a pregnant woman, I’ll be even worse-equipped to defend my small dog and myself than usual, and I’d like to start carrying something to protect ourselves.

I can’t handle a gun well-enough, so I was thinking maybe a collapsible baton (ideally small enough to fit in a fanny pack so I don’t look nuts brandishing it), and perhaps pepper spray? I understand a Taser or stun gun would also hurt my dog if there were a fight, so that’s ruled out.

Should I be ashamed of myself?

I'm not a fighter to be honest, I'm weak and more of a “dialogue” person. But a week ago, someone insulted me for no reason. I asked him to apologize, but he didn’t. He started insulting me even more, so I replied, but in a more subtle way.

Then he hit me in the face. I tried to back off, but he pushed me to the ground and used his weight to choke me. I was scared, so I bit him. He still didn’t let go, so as a last resort I forced my finger into his left eye. He finally let me go, and I ran away.

Now I feel like a coward who had to use “dirty moves” to win.

(I just wanted to vent and maybe get some advice.)

Rate my de-escalation

Was minding my own buisness when started shouting at me and confronting over my, of all things, jacket i was wearing, i ignored him first but he said it again so i just said 'no' and kept walking, he didn't say anything else.

I'd love to know what you think but a couple things come to my mind after thinking about it

I let my guard down, and that's probably why it happened, i usually try to 'engage' with a location by taking in as much of the sorroundings as possible, doing sherlockian deductions, etc, normally i'm head on a swivel watching anything and everything, i was not like this when it happened and i do not know why, but it's highlighted a problem that i need to work on

I did not have sight of the person, i kept walking, thinking back i think this could have been really bad, what if he had a weapon? there's a big crime problem in my country

This happened broad daylight on a private property, other people were present, did this make the situation 'safer'

Aside from fixing my lack of vigilance, i'm also going to get myself the brightest pocket torch i can find, my brother recently got one that's too big to carry, but i got a direct view of it in my eyes for less then a second, wow it was horrible, it took 10 minutes for the dot in my eye to fully vanish, i might buy a couple from temu and see how good they are.

Stopped a violent attack. Did I do the right thing?

I saw someone on the ground being ferociously beaten by another person. I immediately ran up to them and pepper sprayed the attacker, which caused him to stop the attack and flee. The assaulted person was fine. After that I called the police.

I think I did the right thing for my conscience. If I hadn't done that, It would haunt me now. but It still bothers me...Was it the absolutely right thing to do? Should I have just called the police instead and not get involved? What if the attacker had had weapons on him? Did I expose myself to a lot of unnecessary danger? What was the truly right way to act?

If I ever see something like this happening again, should I get involved? Under what circumstances? I think I would just call the police and not get involved if there was more than one of perpetrator. How would other people act in this situation?

This is very complex and I can't seem to reach any conclusion. What do you think?

Ideas for personal alarm with flashlight

Hello self defense community. I live in a place with wild dogs, large cats, and other assorted creatures with claws and/or fangs. I like to ride my motorcycle here and sometimes find myself on dark roads at night (I have trouble putting my toy away even when the sun goes down).

I’d like to get a personal alarm with a legitimately bright flashlight (say, over 1,000 lumens) which would be effective at scaring off animal predators. I’ve so far found a bunch of alarms with some LED lights, but not bright enough in my opinion. The best I’ve seen is the Ledlenser K6R Safety. It looks almost perfect except for two flaws; it’s not waterproof and it’s only 400 lumens.

I realize that p3pper spray is an option, but it would be harder to aim at night. I’d need a light anyway. I’m thinking a noisemaker plus light is a better option.

Any recommendations? Thank you!

Let it slide, when somebody Talks bad behind your back?

Hey guys, I have a difficult situation here. Right now, I live in a boarding house for one year. I live here since 3 months and with 8 other people. There are 4 Vietnamese guys, 3 spanish and me. I live with that one vietnamese guy, who is a quiet, video game addicted, obere guy. I always felt bad for him, because he seemed isolated. But he is still confident and has a big ego. He also has a Problem with the spanish guys. One day he poured water onto one spanish guy's bed. Another guy saw him, that he did that but he still denied it, even though he was the only one with a motive and everybody knew he was guilty. Regardless I still behaved nicely to him, bacause he is my roommate and I wanted to keep a good relationship with him. Then I found out, that he keep talking shit behind my bad with the other vietnamese guys. For example he told the others that I wanted another vietnamese guy to go back to his country. The others believed him and I had to convince them that he is lying. The last time he talked shit behind my back I confronted him with that. He denied it again and just lied straight into my face. Now he talked shit behind my back again and I dont know how to react. Some people adviced me to not let that slide by confronting him again with that and if he would denie it again, I should slap him in the face. How do you guys think about that? What should I do?

What are my odds of success?

If I am at my workplace and a gun carrying perp is walking between my computer racks or our cubicles, how are my odds of success if I roll a chair into him, jump him down as he is off balance, then stab both of his eyes with the screwdrivers I have been holding (easy to push a roller chair while holding screwdrivers)?

Just had the weirdest dream

If someone were to poke me with a needle and inject me with an unknown substance, in public suddenly without my consent, would I be justified in using physical force to stop the assailant if they have begun to flee the scene.

Weird dream but my dream was that I was woken up and stuck with what seemed to be an epi pen or something and then I freaked out and pinned the assailant down demanding to know what it was. Then she said she was calling the police for me pinning her down. I woke up and thought, would that have been lawfully just.

Blessed this was only a dream lol

Flashlight recommendations needed

I live in my RV and would like to ask for a tactical flashlight for Christmas. I5 seems that 500-1000 lumens is recommended for self-defense purposes. But I’m seeing a ton on Amazon claiming 10,000-99,999 lumens, which I’m pretty sure is bunk lol.

Can anyone recommend a decent self-defense/tactical flashlight under, say, $50? Bonus points for rechargeable, but batteries are fine since I won’t be using it constantly. Thanks!

Edit to add: I don’t plan to wield it as a close-range weapon—I mainly just want something that will deter and possibly disorient your run-of-the-mill troublemaker.

What percentage of people can properly defend themselves?

Having done bjj for a while, I have realized first hand just how lethal the upper belts are, and how they are absolutely capable of taking a life if they ever were to need to. This goes for other martial arts as well such as Judo, Muay Thai, and kickboxing.

This had me thinking about everday people, and just how unskilled the average person is. It makes me question just how many people are vulnerable to a self-defense attack and would not know how to defend themselves properly.

If you had to take a guess, what percentage of the worlds population do you believe are skilled enough to successfully defend themselves if they were to ever need to in a self-defense situation? What do you believe are the reasons for your guess?

How to defend against getting strangled from behind like this?

I was watching No Country for Old Men today. It’s a famous movie but to anyone unfamiliar with it, the scene in question features a police officer getting strangled from behind using a pair of handcuffs. It’s on Youtube if you want to see it. Now I first saw that a few years ago and again today, and I really wondered: Is there anything the police officer could’ve done? Surely he could’ve fought back a little better right? But he also didn’t seem to have any way to strike back.

I don’t know much about self defense, so I thought I‘d ask reddit for some thoughts.

Taser/mace combo that’s water resistant?

I am looking for a taser/mace combo that’s water resistant for my girlfriend for when she goes on walks in the neighborhood. We’ve had a few encounters with creeps around here. We live in a rainy area, and I’d like to find her something where she only has to carry one device on her.

I bought her a 3-in-1 taser/flashlight/mace combo from Guard Dog Security, but upon checking the reviews, it isn’t water resistant and stops working in the rain, plus other reviews say it stops working after a while. I’m looking for something of better quality but can’t find much.

Is there anything out there?

Knife resistant shirt or undergarment?

Unfortunately I’m visiting London for business shortly, and I may have to walk in the centre in the evening after dark. Any suggestions for a knife resistant undergarment/shirt that can be worn under a dress shirt and suit without being noticeable? I don’t know anything about these sorts of things. What should I search for?

I don’t need the best protection- after all, the chances are still low and I’ll certainly keep as far away from anything dangerous as possible. But with random attacks not uncommon and over 100 stabbings a day, I’ll like to be better safe than sorry if there’s something I can wear under a suit without it being to revealing.

Basic Self-Defense Lessons

I (male) would like to get my middle school-aged son some basic lessons in self-defense. Defending takes downs, grappling, basic striking, etc. I’d love to be able to take a course with him. After an initial course, we could discuss more advanced classes.

Where might we find courses such as this? I think BJJ is a very strong martial art, but we are not looking to learn and master submissions, etc.

I wondered about kickboxing but not sure that would address takedowns, etc.

I wondered if local PDs might offer classes. I know they offer such courses for women. Do they have similar classes for men?

I’m essentially looking for how to defend oneself from a physical assault. Basic hand to hand combat. Etc.

Any suggestions and/or info welcome!

Self defense curriculum/ education material.

In a few months I will be teaching a light self defense "class" to a group of boys ages 10 to 14. And I am looking for some materials to use as a curriculum and teaching aid. I have training in martial arts, self defense, and security but I have never actually taught a class before.

It's not going to be a class with a focus on how to fight. The focus is mainly on awareness, avoidance, and how to best prevent getting hurt. Fairly basic stuff the actual fighting aspect is mostly out of the scope for the class.

I would appreciate the help.

Do you consider retaliation part of self-defense?

Given a situation in which you are not seriously injured, and your life is not in danger... Suppose someone attacks you and then leaves. You took the hit... Now what? Do you just let it go? How likely are you to pursue this person and try to resolve the situation. Yes, I know you can always just back off and report the assault to the authorities. But this is unlikely to result in justice, and they'd just get away with it.

Adding a martial art to my self defense “portfolio”

I’ve been taking self defense training seriously for the last couple years. Most of my training has been with firearms and situational awareness. I do pistol training a few times a week and am getting ready to start my first season of competitive shooting (USPSA). Basically, I’m very competent with a gun, and feel very confident in my abilities to detect a potential threat and be proactive about it. HOWEVER, I’ve got absolutely zero abilities to defend myself in hand to hand/ weaponless combat. I’ve lost a lot of weight in the last year, but previously treated my size almost as a disability so just discounted learning any sort of martial art, but now that I’ve lost a lot of weight and improved my cardio/ flexibility I think it is feasible to add a MA discipline. It will mostly be an additional activity to help keep me fit, but adding one that has practical benefits and could be useful in a self defense situation would be cool. The two I am considering are BJJ and Krav Maga. Just curious if someone could compare the two for me and help me pick whichever might be better for me purposes.

I’m not looking to replace my weapon/ non lethal (pom spray) and will still practice preventative measures for SD encounters. For a lot of people learning a martial art as a self defense measure would take too much work and isn’t necessarily feasible. But I figure since I’m looking for some sort of fitness activity and can’t stand traditional organized sports, working toward a practical defense discipline isn’t a bad place to start. Thanks in advance.

Would you hit a weak old man if he begs u aggressively for money

Lets say you meet a old man who is twice your age.

He holds your hands and starts shouting at you to give him some negligible amount of money . He is a stranger, you have never met before. He refuses to let go till you have given him this amount.

You have money on you and the amount he is asking is barely 5% of what you have in your purse.

Would you hit him?

Or would you give him some money to get out of the situation.

Dealing with ambushes

In the hipotetic scenario you're minding your own business and someone attacks you out of the blue, how would you defend yourselves? This is something pretty unexpected and it can come from anyone, anhtime and anywhere (RNCs, sucker punches, etc) it almost happens to me when a guy who was walking the oposite direction as me showed me his fists, i was checking him with the corner of my eye and ready with my OC spray inside my pocket. I know prevention is everything and avoiding danger is the #1 rule but sometimes streets are too narrow to mantain a safe distance from suspicious people. Any idea of how would you approach situations like these?

When is it probably too late to train? I’m 43 but I feel young

I should have trained when I was younger. I feel young. Chronic pain makes you a victim. Truly. I’ve had close calls with people in public who noticed that I’m “off”. I stopped talking to the public which feels really good to do and a smart move. But I’m angry at the chronic pain itself and the energy that some people give off to people they think are off. Again, I wish this happened to me when I was younger. Life can be sick

Or, I don’t train.

But I have been friendly with a guy who has a very upbeat attitude at the store I get my vitamins from and he does Muay Tai and he told me he would help me

You can kill yourself or train. It’s up to you

How I Defended Myself From a Dog Attack as a Kid

Terrifying experience when I was attacked by a dog as a kid while walking to school

I was about 8-9 years old and was walking to school with my older sister who was only 2 years older than me. Then I stood still to get my dime chocolate and eat it. As I was opening my chocolate bar, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I get jumped by a dog from behind. It was a husky I believe.

Now my sister was far ahead, and when she saw it happen, she ran away to school scared. I was all alone. The dog’s owner wasn’t around, and I was in a sort of a park where no cars had access to, so no cars driving by to save me, and nobody else was there at the park to save me either as it was in the early morning. I had to fight the dog myself.

When it jumped me, I fell to the ground and there I am lying on the floor. Then the dog rushed at me again, but I kept kicking it in the face while lying on my back with both my legs while screaming and crying, it felt HORRIBLE. You can’t imagine what such an intense situation felt like as such a young boy. My heart was pounding out of my chest.

It kept lunging and lunging, but every time it did, I kicked it in the face with both of my feet. And eventually one of my boots flew off from all the kicking, but I never got bit because I kept resisting, I kept fighting. Every time it lunged at me, I kicked it in the face. Now this was going on for a long time, can’t remember how long, but it felt very long, well over 30 seconds. Luckily I was never bit with my tactic of spamming kicks in its face.

Eventually, the owner came and retrieved her dog by making it come over to her. I got up while crying on the same spot where I fought, and there she was standing with her dog beside her. She never said a word to me. She just stood there with her dog. I can’t remember much of what she looked like, but I still have a figure of her in my head — short haired, thin, maybe fit, had a cap on, and was probably in her 30’s.

Then I kept on walking to school with teardrops all the way. Don’t remember if I ever took my chocolate bar back. When I talked to my sister again in school, she said was she was scared and ran to school, but she never ever told a teacher that I was attacked when she reached the school. That’s fucking insane. Like imagine I wasn’t so brave and couldn’t fight back that dog before the owner came, I coulda been mauled to death. Hate my sister for that, and she’s always been narcissistic like this even as we grew up, only caring about herself.

And I even told my teacher, but she didn’t seem to care that much. She never contacted my parents or the school, almost like she didn’t believe me. But I still do wonder why that dog owner did nothing. It was such a long time ago that I don’t know if I have hatred for her — no responsibility, didn’t check on me, didn’t even say a word. I still wonder why.

I’m 18 now and I hope you guys can learn from my terrifying experience and maybe share it with your kids and teach them and other people what to do if this happens to them. It can save them. My instincts just took over and saved me.

Does going to the gym help with self-defense?

I literally can't face anyone in a street fight and if I do I'll probably get beat up in a matter of seconds.

That's why I've been really thinking of hitting the gym daily specifically for that purpose.

I heard from some classmates that it's excellent for improving self-defense and fighting experience.

Is that true or does it have nothing to do with self-defense?

They are lying on the ground and you kick them in the head like a soccer ball from the throat with one kick?

Is that good to do when they fall down or will that kill them?

Ps. I've never done this but always wondered how much damage it would do.

Neighbors dog continues to attempt to bite upon exiting house

I’ve reached a braking point. My upstairs neighbors dog has peaked my anxiety by continuously attempting to attack me upon exiting and entering my apartment (downstairs basement apt) I’ve reported to animal control and it has lead to significant problems including rent increases. I’m at the point where I don’t know if I need to try xylitol. Spreading an entire pound or two around my six foot walk space to create a makeshift barrier or if I need to equip bear spray… needless to say I’m not in a position to move right away and the more I involve authorities, the more difficult things get. Is there something like cayenne pepper I can put down or something I can do without getting too extreme? Needless to say I can have their dog taken but it will only result in more issues for me. Any tips or advice is appreciated

Getting big is the best self defense

Martial arts should be a given if you wanna have confidence that if you did get into an altercation your good. However if your a man the single best thing you can do is lift and build a physique that makes you intimidating to avoid any trouble in the first place and give you confidence. No trained fighter is gonna pick a fight with anyone and untrained people wont pick a fight with someone they dont think they can beat. Your 20x more likely to get into a fight being under 160 lbs

I recently was walking in a dark side street, about a block away from a main street, and a homeless guy started walking about a foot behind me and started calling me slurs and then at one point saying "what do you think I'm going to kill you?". I was unarmed, but started walking more quickly (maybe I should've ran?) and ignoring him. Luckily once I got into the main street with other people the guy eventually backed off, although he was still following me for like another block even on the main street, so this guy definitely was crazy or on drugs or drunk.

I'm a guy, taller and also more muscular than the homeless guy, so I could probably take him on in a fist fight. But I didn't want to strike him since I didn't know if he had a weapon of any kind.

I was thinking of either 1) telling him to back the fuck off in a threatening voice, 2) running into the main street, 3) turning around and either punch or shove him.

The other scenario running through my mind was, what if the guy made physical contact with me first in anyway, such as shoving me or grabbing me from the back, do I at that point turn around and punch him? I feel like if he initiates physical contact, then I have no choice at that point but to fight back physically.

Is Once a Week Sufficient

I want to do martial arts once a week but I’ve heard if it’s done twice a week it’s the only way to grasp the techniques from class to class. Is this true? I’m just learning practical martial arts so I don’t care about belt levels. Thank you for your advice!

is it okay to use a knive against someone with no weapons

i tried looking online but the only thing i find is where the attacker has a knive, so this is pretty much my last try.

its pretty muhc if i can defent myself with a knive against a person whos bigger and much stronger then me with a knive, then i have nothing els to defent myself, and i know that i would die in a fight.

What are my options? After 2 labrum surgeries

Context - I’ve (25M) had two labrum surgeries on my left shoulder (pitcher in college). At this point it’s relatively fragile and prone to tendonitis/more tears. That said I’m an active person trying to find a way to become less useless when walking downtown with my girlfriend at night time.

Im not anti gun/pepper spray , but again id like an alternative to make it harder for someone to be a threat.

My question would there be any martial art options i could learn that i could get by without relying/using my left arm? Are gyms willing to teach someone with that kind of restriction?

Let me know! Thank you

Stun gun, pepper spray or ??? to put in my daughter's car.

My daughter is a college sophomore who drives to class in a typical safe college town. I guess she and her friends are freaking themselves out because she wants to keep some sort of self defense tools in her car. She forwarded me some links to some cheap ($50-ish) stun guns on Amazon and I'm skeptical of their utility. I'm thinking maybe just a pepper spray mounted to the dash or something might be more useful?

Comments? What is the most recommended self defense tool for women to keep in their cars?

Are there any good YouTube channels on self defense techniques?

I can't really afford to take a self defense class right now, but I just got out of an ab*sive relationship and I want to learn some self defense because I feel really unsafe sometimes now due to my PTSD from it. I am willing to self-study until I can take a class, but I have seen the really bad self defense videos online before where they advise you to do insane things that definitely wouldn't work. I want to make sure that I would be watching legit videos that can teach some self defense techniques, so I figured I would ask about that here.

I am plus sized too, so I worry about situations where I could get attacked and wouldn't be able to run away because I will probably be slower than most attackers :/. Lastly, I worry that since my CPTSD is really bad, that I would try very extreme things that could escalate a confrontation. Basically, I worry that I would overcompensate for my lack of training by doing something crazy that would make an attacker escalate.

Side note: I am in therapy, so don't worry about the CPTSD, I am working through it and have great support. I just think that learning some self defense techniques would help me feel more secure and even empowered.

Edit: Just to clarify, I mean unarmed self defense.

New to martial arts—will my reflexes ever catch up?

After years of thinking about it, I finally signed up for martial arts/self-defense classes. The gym I joined seems great—they offer self-defense, kickboxing, boxing, and other styles.

Since I wasn’t sure which path to commit to, I told them I just wanted to start with self-defense. I’ve been training for about 2 weeks now (around 6 classes total).

Recently, I stepped into the ring for some light boxing. The format was simple: one round defense, one round offense, for about 8 rounds. Honestly, I felt like a punching bag. My partner wasn’t going hard on me at all—he slowed down, gave me constant feedback, and even explained what I was doing wrong.

But here’s the thing: even when I knew what I was supposed to do, my brain just froze when the punches came at me. I couldn’t dodge in time, even though he said he was going at 50%. It felt like my reactions just didn’t exist.

I’m 36 years old and really just want to learn how to defend myself. I’ve dabbled in martial arts before (a couple months here and there, maybe 3 different times, last attempt was 6 years ago). This is the first time I’m sticking with it consistently. I also haven’t worked out in years, so I know it’ll take time.

My question is for anyone who’s been through this stage:

Did you also feel like your reflexes were nonexistent at the beginning?

How long did it take before things “clicked” and you could actually react?

What helped you make progress?

I’m not discouraged—I’m actually enjoying it and finally have the time and money to do it. But I’d really love to hear other people’s experiences.

Grimsburg Gravle for Self-Defense

I'd like to get a Grimburg Gavle for security where I work. can't use any kind of spray because it could hurt animals at the location (and ruin a lot of product). not being able to keep the grimsburg loaded is a concern. does anyone know if it would be possible to have the co2 canister 'loosely' in the gun, ready to 'pop' quickly so it can be used almost immediately? seems as though they have an edge over the pistelles. is there another way to keep the grimsburgs almost 'ready to go?' or is there a non-lethal gun that's better than the grimsburg or the pistelle, one that I somehow missed in my searches? for work it would have to be a pistol or something similarly small that can fit in a desk drawer, it can't be a rifle. thanks for any advice sent my way!

Will learning how to fight, automatically help me with confrontation?

Hi, for context, I know the question seems like common sense. But I'm 20 in college and have these people that for some reason love shitting on me. I never talked back in my life because I was afraid of it escalating physically. If I learn to fight, will this mental roadblock automatically go away, or are there psychological things I need to go through as well, such as therapy, etc...?

What can i do to not freeze in potentially dangerous situations?

Today I went to IKEA and on the escalator I unfortunately stood in somebody’s personal space without realizing it. I stood one step below the guy and but on the other side of the escalator. It was not intentional, it just happened. His girlfriend stood one step in front of the guy. The escalator moved up and I did not move or made the impression I want to walk up the escalator.

The person in front of me looked pretty muscular who either fights or does rugby or similar sport with heavy physical contact. He turned around and asked me if i want to stand next to him or what. That’s when i completely froze down. I simply said “No, thank you”. I felt so awkward and frozen that i did not even said ‘apologies, i did not want to get in your personal space’ or simply took a step back. I simply stared in front of me frozen and feeling intimidated by the guy while the guy looked at me. I was just waiting for the escalator ride to be over and go the other way. I noticed his girlfriend was tugging his hand to turn around. So I expect this could have ended a lot worse if it was not Saturday morning and IKEA but after some alcohol in a bar. I’m also a guy, decent shape but would have had no chance if the other guy decides to beat me up.

I would like to hear how i can react better to de escalate and remove myself from the situation and avoid just simply freezing on the spot. Thank you!

Best self defense against a pack of dogs?

Whenever I go to the bus stop, there are always stray dogs laying on the side of the road. They're nearly always acting aggressive towards me, running up to me and barking. It was scary, but I have to keep going, so after a while they always leave me alone. But today was different. They ran up to me once again, but this time one bit me lightly. I didn't run or anything, but was pretty terrified of the experience. I'm now afraid for my safety. What works best against dogs? Dog spray, paper spray? Will it guarantee that they leave me alone (maybe learn that I have something nasty to use against them and be afraid to approach me)? I appreciate any advice, since I'm scared going outside now

When is it okay to strike first, when walking in public?

I walk a lot and I have been running into some weird situations. Walking down a sidewalk away from anything public. But it's common to see people walking it occasionally. As you need to cross this part to get to the main part of the town.

This has happened 3 times now. I start walking on one side so as to not run into the person. 3 times now I notice the person walking towards me switches to my lane. I keep my head down but eyes up so I can check them out. So I see them intentionally walk into my path.

The first guy I just switched lanes. But as I was walking past him I noticed his arms were very tense. And I took a quick glance at him and his eyes were just on me. He also had a ton of tattoos. I typically associate people with a lot of tattoos as emotional. Loose cannon.

He is also obviously a immigrant from Mexico. So I think tattoos are a little different in Latino culture right?

2nd guy did the same thing but he was a little bit drunk. And said " get the fuck away from me" as I walked past him.

3rd guy same thing walked into my lane so I switched. His arms were very tense as well. Like he was ready to unload one on me.

I don't want these guys to get the jump on me. If they walk into my lane for a 2nd time after I move. Should I smoke him. Because for me walking into me the 2nd time is obviously aggressive right?

I am a purple belt in jiujitsu but no striking and I have been out of training for a little over 6 months.

Reccs on personal alarms + other tips against non-violent stalker

Hello, I hope it's ok to post this query here, but mods please do let me know if not.

I (F) have a non-violent (F) stalker who has now found out my current workplace, and it is close to where they live. I want to prepare myself for if this person starts showing up outside my workplace and following me at lunchtimes or on the way home. Maybe trying to get into my personal space and force a personal/social relationship. (I have gone to the police but there doesn't seem to be much they can do yet.)

I am thinking of getting a personal alarm and would be grateful for recommendations, thank you.

I'd also be grateful for tips on use. Because this stalker is female and doesn't physically threaten me (and I am bigger than her), if I set the alarm off I don't think passers-by would easily understand the threat?

If anyone has any other practical suggestions for my personal sense of safety around my workplace, or has experience of dealing with a non-violent stalker in public places, I'd very much appreciate tips or advice.

TIA!

I had to draw my gun on an attacker to save a woman's life.

Something really intense and awful happened, and I could use some advice. My head is still spinning. I gave a quick statement to the police when they showed up, but now I'm second-guessing everything. I was driving and looked and saw something horrific at a gas station I was passing. A guy was on top of a woman, grabbing her hair and just smashing her head into the concrete over and over. I honestly thought I was watching him murder her, so I slammed on the brakes and pulled over to help. When I got closer, the scene was pure chaos. I could hear another man on the ground shouting, "Help me, I've been shot!" The attacker was still on top of the woman, who was desperately fighting him for a gun. In the middle of it all, I yelled out, "Whose gun is it?" The woman screamed back, "It's his, please help me!" That was it for me. He was still hitting her, and she was begging for my help. I drew my firearm and yelled at him to get off of her. Thankfully, the moment he saw I had a gun, he stopped and ran off. I told the police what happened when they got there. But now that the adrenaline is gone, I'm just sitting here completely terrified. I keep replaying it in my head. I'm just wondering, am I going to be in any trouble for this? Did I do the right thing?

How Do I Get Myself To Actually Learn Self Defense?

Basically I (18M) want to learn self defense but I've never actually done it or stayed consistent with learning. Logically, I know that nobody is born knowing how to fight properly, and you don't know how until you're taught. As with any learned skill. So no one is going to mock me for not knowing what I'm doing in the beginning. Logically I know this. But I have anxiety, autism, and horrible self confidence due to being bullied into isolation my whole life.

I'm so used to being the outcast, and being beaten down (emotionally) that I've started hurting myself (again, emotionally) as much as others do. I want to learn self defense but my brain always cycles through degrading thoughts such as "You're weak, and you'll always be weak. They're gonna see how weak you are and you'll look stupid. Why would anyone bother to teach someone as incapable of you? You'll never be like your brother. Blah blah blah self hatred blah blah blah." Yeah, that's probably stupid, but it is keeping from doing this (and plenty of other things) and I don't know how to get over it.

It's not like I have no confidence. I'm confident in my appearance, my writing, my art, my intelligence, my humor. I don't think there's nothing good about me. But strength is not a trait I'd use to describe myself, physically speaking. I know what I'm good at and I tend to stay in my comfort zone. I'm terrified to step out of it and I don't even know if I can.

Anyway. I know I talk too much, I just want to provide enough context. Maybe this isn't the right place for this post but I was just wondering if anyone here had the same experience and was able to overcome it.

I feel like its especially important for me to learn because I'm part of a marginalized community and don't live in the most tolerant area, so who knows when someone might try to hurt or kill me🤷🏻‍♂️

Black belt in BJJ left me unprepared for real world violence

TLDR : A 5'9 160 lb dude nearly blinded me and started kicking my head in and now I've lost faith in myself as a martial artist

I (28M) am a pretty strong and large guy, I'm 6ft2 and 240lb or so, I've been strength training since I was in my early teens , I played football in school and trained BJJ, I've been in a couple of scraps in my teens and early 20s but nothing remotely serious, with no real injuries

I have however been the guy that usually de-escalates or breaks up fights, I've done that quite a few times, owing to my size and presence people usually calm down quick and don't take this further (believe it or not I've gotten a few dates from doing this). I've never had to restrain anyone or use any violence before to achieve a de-escalation or break up a fight.

Last month though my entire world got rocked when I tried to break up a fight between 2 guys in a bar. I live in Seattle but was visiting a my sister who lives and Vancouver and we were out at a bar and these 2 guys were screaming at eachother for a good 5 minutes, the bartenders steered clear and looked scared to act and a lot of the patrons so I stepped in.

I tried to talk to them calmly but before I could think one guy just smashed a beer bottle over my head and left shards in my left eye, then used the bottle to stab my eye further, the pain was so goddamn intense , he then flicks out a riot baton , hits me in the knee several times before I go down and then when I'm on the floor he starts kicking in my head, after maybe 4 or 5 kicks he runs away.

Neither of these guys were caught and the police haven't done shit to even try and get them or really put any effort into investigating since the security footage in the area is too low quality and none of the witnesses knew them at all. From my description of them men police have concluded that they were most likely Asian gang members.

I was discharged from the hospital 2 weeks ago and I feel shattered BJJ was my life almost, I met my fiance through it and it has left me totally unprepared for real life violence, Ill admit feel so powerless and insecure, I'm in therapy now and will try and get back to my old self but I won't lie, I've lost a lot of self confidence.

Overwhelmed with possibilities in a self defense scenario

I regularly watch Active Self Protection on YouTube, I take in more war footage than I should (working on it with my therapist), and I train while using games like Ground Branch and Ready or Not to be comfortable with the headspace of "this is chaos, find your way through or find your way out). With that being said, I watch these videos and go through video game scenarios, and sometimes I see moments where it was always in the cards, and it seems you or the person you're watching are destined to die, even if you're the good guy. How do you, as someone who dreads a self-defense scenario but wants to come out on top, overcome the worry that "the moment you engage this threat, you will die". Even if I train enough, even if I intake these videos on thinking about this or that, I'm terrified of being the person who doesn't even get a chance to end the threat or get out alive.

TEACH ME THE ACTUAL DEFENSE

17M. I want to learn self defense, not any particular martial arts. Something that is actually useful, like mix of muay thai, boxing and all. I have a punching bag at home and some wraps. What can I possibly do with my stuff.

How to severely hurt but not kill?

Female, living in an unsafe environment with sibling who has a load of mental illness along with bipolar. No one in the house takes my concerns serious enough even though I’ve tried expressing how unsafe I feel. This person is a literal ticking time bomb. He often does childish things that seem to provoke me, which I feel will enable him to have a reason to attack me if I choose to respond one day. I have one canister of pepper spray but I think it’s a relatively cheap brand that I don’t think will be as affective. I have a hammer but he will easily outweigh me considering that he has his own punching bag he’s been hitting for the past 2 years by now, and he weighs much more than me. I can tell he would easily disorientate me from one punch alone. I don’t think a taser will do much because he could jump on or at me anytime but also that I believe he is that mental enough that it probably will anger him so much that he wouldn’t notice any pain. Believe me, I’ve called the cops several times to which they’ve all done nothing, and everyone pretty much enables him to keep the peace and I have No safe place to go either. I am reaching an end mentally that I feel that I will snap and find a way to kill him or have to during self defense. I am not looking to kill him and I don’t ever want to own a gun so that’s not an option.

How to handle situations where someone keeps pushing your boundaries?

I had an incident today that’s stuck in my head. I had just finished a workout at the gym and was walking home when some crackhead started following me, asking for cigarettes. I said no multiple times, but he kept persisting and eventually pushed me. I warned him that if he touched me again, I’d defend myself. He then swung at me first, so I punched him once in the face and walked away.

I wasn’t scared of him I knew I could handle him physically but it frustrated me that he kept pushing my boundaries after I’d made it clear I wanted to be left alone.

I’ve never hit anyone before, and I’m still replaying it in my head. I don’t feel bad about defending myself, but I’m angry it even had to get to that point. part of me knows I should've just ran away but I guess i was already in a bit of flight or fight, was in the wrong? I feel like I stooped down to his level out of anger and adrenaline

For anyone who’s been in similar situations:

How do you shut things down earlier before it escalates?

How do you set firmer boundaries without sounding aggressive?

And how do you deal with the anger and adrenaline that lingers afterward?

I’d like to feel more prepared next time without things getting physical if possible.

I recently had an close encounter that got me thinking I know almost nothing about how these things happen, is there a typical situation or way in which a dog attacks etc. I'm looking to hear your experiences, lessons and tips.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but I don't hang out at these places much. In general is it better just to avoid them?

Why is Byrna becoming so popular?

Hey guys, I feel like I'm seeing this Byrna launcher thing everywhere all of a sudden. Is it just me, or has it blown up recently?

I'm a bit out of the loop, to be honest, it seems like just yesterday I'd never heard of it, and now I'm seeing their ads and hearing people talk about them. Did I miss a memo or something? Was there a big event or a viral video that I'm completely unaware of?

I'm genuinely curious because the sudden popularity seems kind of random to me. Is there a specific reason why so many people are suddenly interested in these Byrna devices? I feel like I'm the only one who's a bit clueless here. Any info would be appreciated!

Defense against slams from a shoulder carry

Here I’m talking about the recent assault by Raja Jackson on the wrestler. What is the proper defense against that slam. The wrestler was obviously not expecting full contact. But if someone successfully gets you into a double leg lift all the way into a shoulder carry like Raja did, what defense should you be doing instead of just waiting to get slammed? All my searches seem to just give advice on how to not get picked up in the first place, what should you be doing if you’re already in a shoulder carry.

What's your best irl self-defense story?

I'm a new self-defense teacher; my students are doing great so far (we've been working on break-aways and blocking techniques recently), but I'd really love some real-world self-defense stories to give them a bit more reality to consider in class. While I always go over hypothetical situations at every angle I can, I think real situations could hit harder.

Ways to subdue a large dog (unarmed)

I was recently attacked by our family dog (about 4.5ft long, 85-100lbs) and although I was able to get him off me and yell at him enough to make him submit, it’s made me paranoid about ever being in a situation where I would have to hurt him or get hurt by him and I want to know the best ways to subdue or pin a dog without injuring him. Is this the right place?

Gas Pistol vs mace?

In my country, firearms are prohibited, gas pistols are the closest we can get. But they have the same effective range, they fire the same tear gas as a cheap pepper spray? I suppose the only advantage is:

  1. deterrence, it looks like a real gun
  2. can fire multiple types of tear gases

Any other reasons to purchase a gas pistol?

Best class to take for building confidence and self defense?

I have been dealing with low confidence and low self esteem. I'm currently on a small weight loss journey from 200LBS to 164LBS. I would love to find something that I can add onto my weight loss journey but also boosts my confidence.

I also am looking for something easy and simple but effective enough to protect myself. I come from Las Vegas and unfortunately after being gang r*ped an ex of mine decided to tell one of the girls (dating one of the guys that gang r*ped me) about my experience. I feel like I now have to have my head on a swivel especially for times I travel back to Vegas without my husband. I'm worried about women and men fighting me over thing in public at bars or clubs or just out in the open... I want to be able to have ten toes down and hold myself with self defense IF anything were to happen. I'm not interested in fighting anyone at all. Truly purely only for self defense. Thank you for reading and I appreciate any tips and comments that are positive and that answer my questions.

Pepper spray indirectly as defense

This may sound stupid but I recently sprayed my pepper spray in the bathroom to test it out and it was incredibly strong. It had a burning sensation in the bathroom for a good 20 minutes and I was far away from where the spray hit. It had me coughing, nose feeling weird and my eyes slightly burning. This had me wondering if using pepper spray indirectly would work as defense indoors.

What I mean by this is if there were to be an intruder but I didn’t have a gun would it be possible to drench the hallway walls in pepper spray to delay or possibly distract the intruders from getting to the bedroom? I’m not sure if this is a dumb idea or not but I looked it up and didn’t see much of an answer. This wouldn’t be to completely get rid of intruders but it would be to delay the inevitable and give me and my family time to hide, maybe even long enough for a cop to show.

(Yes I do plan to get my gun license soon btw)

Pepper spray alternatives?

I'm severely allergic to pepper and fear that if I ever have to use it, I'll turn a "run away!" situation into a "run away, and my throat is closing!" situation. I do carry pepper gel because that'll disperse less and seems a little better, but it still scares me. I like the activation method though, I'd like to make something that'll work similarly but isn't made with peppers. Any ingredient suggestions? Like, maybe peppercorns? They're fine, it's just actual peppers (anything from chilli to bell, any of em are scary for me to have)

What should a woman do to protect herself against a man?

Recently I was play fighting with my boyfriend, and he grabbed my arm and I genuinely could not free myself. Of course we were only playing and he let go as soon as he saw I became nervous but it made me realise that if a man were to try and attack me, I would be unable to defend myself. My boyfriend isn’t a bodybuilder by any means, he has a slim build, doesn’t work out and works in an office. Whereas I do work out and focus on weight training pretty often. I like to lead a pretty independent lifestyle and I’m on my own a lot of the time out and about, genuinely what would I do if I were in a situation where I was attacked by a man? How could I defend myself?

Verbal Skills: Lifesaver or Just Luck?

I’m 100% in the camp that says verbal de-escalation should be your first move whenever possible — avoiding a fight is always a win. But I’ve also seen situations where the other person simply would not calm down, no matter what was said… and it made me wonder how often we overestimate our ability to talk someone down. I’ve even come across some cultural differences — in certain places, people will challenge you and start a fight without taking “no” for an answer.

Have you ever had a time where you tried de-escalating and it worked beautifully? Or the opposite — where words made zero difference? What tipped the scale either way in your experience?

Did humour work? Did they end up byeing you a drink? Did someone else intervene? Did they step on a banana peel?
